(When the stood still, in Joshua 10:)
Joshua 10:12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
(What stopped moving, the earth from spinning or the sun orbiting? If it was the earth that stopped rotating on its axis, then how quickly did it stop moving?Stopping a car, will cause things in the car to move forward, i.e. an object in motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted upon by an external force. If an aquarium is in the car, it must be stopped slowly to prevent the water from spilling out towards the front. The momentum of the Mediterranean Sea, if the earth stopped too quickly, would have caused it spill to eastward over the land of Canaan. But that didn't happen. So, did the earth stop slowly enough?Or did the LORD, in addition to stopping the earth from spinning, also stopped the momentum of the Mediterranean Sea, to prevent the drowning of Joshua and Israel?Or did the sun stop moving? That would imply that the sun orbits the earth, and stopped overhead, above Joshua, for a full day. i.e. geocentric, rather than heliocentricThe moon also stayed, explainable by the heliocentric model, with the earth spinning stopped; but also possible for the geocentric model, if the moon stopped moving, also.)
(Something stopped, I was wondering which it was that stopped.)
(btw - back in high school physics, which was a long time ago, they divided us up into different teams. Two of the teams were to debate/prove/disprove the two theories, geocentric and heliocentric - I was on one of those two teams. The team that had been better behaved in class, was awarded with the heliocentric model.I was on the other team, geocentric - we were not as well behaved. So, we had to manually calculate, and hand plot the epicycles of Mars, intrinsic to the geocentric model, amongst other very difficult tasks for high school. That was quite a while before reading Joshua 10.)
(another btw - in 2nd grade, where I grew up, is when they first taught, and convinced us, that the sun doesn't move, but that the earth rotates on its axis.2nd grade is old enough to understand things, but yet young enough to not question - that's when they also first introduced us to evolution. My brother-in-law was sick during those weeks of 2nd grade, and grew up always believing that the sun orbits the earth. When he was about 40, I asked him about this.If I remember correctly, I think he mentioned that if he sees a baseball passing over his head, it is because the baseball is moving. That if he sees a bird flying over his head, it is because the bird is moving. That if he sees clouds passing overhead, it is because the clouds are moving. But he wanted to know why, when he sees the sun moving overhead, that I would insist that the sun is not moving, but that the earth is.He wouldn't buy it.Of course, no one could also show him from the scriptures that the sun does "NOT" move, that only the earth does. So, he still believes that the sun moves around the earth.)
