The Curse and the Covenant

A Study in Daniel 9, Jeremiah 29–32, and Hebrews 8–10

Disobedience to God’s laws caused the curse of invasion and exile to fall on the House of Judah, resulting in their banishment from Judaea into the service of King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. Decades later, Daniel, the elderly prophet who had been exiled as a youth with other elites from Judaea, read the letter and the book written by Jeremiah (at the beginning of their exile), addressed to the elders and captives in Babylon. Daniel learned that although their exile was prophesied to last for 70 years, God had already planned their restoration ‘after those days.’ Furthermore, God promised, if they called on Him in prayer and searched for Him with all their heart, He would listen to them and bring them back from their captivity. In an astonishing discovery, Daniel also read in Jeremiah’s book that God intended to repair His broken relationship with the people of Judah and forgive their sins via a New Covenant.

After reading what Jeremiah had written, Daniel embarked on a period of prayerful confession and repentance on behalf of his people. He was mightily surprised when the Angel Gabriel suddenly appeared, to explain the timetable for their return to Judaea to restore Jerusalem and reveal God’s strategy to forgive their sins. Gabriel also mentioned a covenant that would be confirmed after the appearance of their long-awaited Messiah, the ‘anointed one’ of God.

The Curse and the Covenant gives a messianic interpretation of Daniel’s ‘Prophecy of Seventy Weeks,’ and reveals how the six objectives (for the forgiveness and salvation of the Jews) were met and fulfilled by Jesus Christ within the 490 years stipulated by Gabriel and recorded by Daniel.
