Yes, like many other things, over the centuries first the Roman church, then her Protestant daughters have  changed this ritual from its origional meaning... the Roman church has gone so far to say that you go to hell unless you constantly partake of this ritual...

This is not what Jesus said... Basically, He was saying that whenever you break bread and drink wine at your evening meal, you do so remembering Him....  He said that "whenever you eat the bread  and drink the cup,do so in rememberence of me"...
