"Taken To Prayer, But For What?"

The entire world has been thrown into utter chaos. In a matter of just a few weeks, the world as we know it has ceased to exist. Most everyone with any sense of the reality of what is going on understands that it is very unlikely that things will ever be the same. This spans the spectrum from both the “religious” community, as well as the secular world.

Mankind is in the midst of a global pandemic. Corona virus, otherwise known as CoVid-19, is wreaking havoc, the likes of which has never been seen before. It’s quite clear that even the “experts” have no real understanding on how this virus works.

“Half of humanity is now on lockdown and 90 countries are calling for confinement.” (Source: Euro News ). More people are infected every day, and the death toll continues to rise. The actual number of deaths caused by this virus will likely never be determined, due to lack of adequate testing, combined with the suspicion that some countries are not reporting their actual numbers.

A recent news headline caught my eye, and at first, I got a bit excited, hoping that eyes were being opened and hearts were being softened. However, as I read the article, my heart took a nosedive. The title of the article: Most Americans Say Coronavirus Outbreak Has Impacted Their Lives: More than half have prayed for an end to the virus’s spread.

“…a new Pew Research Center survey finds that the coronavirus outbreak is having profound impacts on the personal lives of Americans in a variety of ways.”

“The virus also has impacted Americans’ religious behaviors. More than half of all U.S. adults (55%) say they have prayed for an end to the spread of coronavirus. Large majorities of Americans who pray daily (86%) and of U.S. Christians (73%) have taken to prayer during the outbreak – but so have some who say they seldom or never pray and people who say they do not belong to any religion (15% and 24%, respectively).” (Source: Pew Social Trends)

In a conversation that evening, discussing this article, my beloved said, “God must be furious right now!” We talked about how this reminds us of when our children come cozying up to us, doting on us, and telling us how much they love us. We have four teenagers, and one pre-teen, so this kind of sudden attention from them causes us to be quite suspicious. Obviously, they are laying it on thick because they want something. Any other time, we do good to get a goodnight hug and kiss from them, at their age.

On the surface, this news sounds great! This virus has caused people to hit their knees before the LORD. But did you notice anything missing in these prayers?
