"why not?"

In reading through the old testament, there are not too many accounts of evil spirits.
There was not much discussion of people possessed, or having devils cast out.
Yet, during Jesus' earthly ministry, there were many people in Israel so horribly afflicted by them.
What happened to Israel, for them to get to that condition?
Which leads me to ask, how do these people get to the following condition?

Revelation 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

Is part of it, that like Israel, there is a failure to follow:

II Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

For some reason, Israel either didn't believe this, or simply didn't want to do it.
What about us, in our country, are we like Israel was, or like mystery, Babylon?
With so many of us professing a faith in Jesus, do we not believe this scripture, or do we simply not want to do it?
The LORD's remedy is II Chronicles 7:14, our remedy appears to be in simply electing a Republican president.
Why are we not flooding the altars, in our churches, with repentance, until the LORD proves to us II Chronicles 7:14?
Maybe some repented and wept, once, briefly.
Most of us, sadly, refuse to repent.
Because of if we had, then the LORD would have kept his part of II Chronicles 7:14.
Is it because we are secretly hoping that the LORD will soon judge our country, and send as many people as possible to hell?
Or do we think Jesus wasn't serious, when he warned about the lost going to hell?
How little do I care for my neighbor?
Do I want my neighbor to perish in judgment?
Do I want my neighbor to go to hell?
How dare I claim otherwise!
