Thoughts on the woman caught in adultery and her accusers.


Read the account first and then read the precepts set in order:


And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.  John 8:2
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,  John 8:3
They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.  John 8:4
Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?  John 8:5
This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.  John 8:6
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.  John 8:7
And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.  John 8:8
And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.  John 8:9
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?  John 8:10
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.  John 8:11

Those that tempted Jesus concerning the woman caught in the very act of adultery brought the woman and did not bring the man.


Adultery required 2 people, the man and the woman and 2 witnesses for judgment.


Jesus wrote on the ground and the words he wrote may have been the words we find in the book of Leviticus which required both man and woman to be stoned.  The accusers of this woman did not bring the man, therefore, these scribes and Pharisees were false witnesses and being such they too were worthy of being stoned to death according to the law of Moses.


Perhaps the man who was caught with the woman was an acquaintance of theirs; nevertheless, they did not bring forth the man with the woman.


At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. Deuteronomy 17:6

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established. Deuteronomy 19:15
But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. Matthew 18:16
He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Hebrews 10:28

(question: what would the Lord Jesus have done if the accusers brought forth the man and the woman?  The new testament did not go into effect until after the death of the testator).


My answer is found in:
