"Jane Daniel 9:27"
Jane A:
As I have stated, "words" have explicit and even sometime implicit
meaning. I must apologize for any confusion that came as a result
of my typing. I failed to put the word "and" in between "His
people the Jews, "and' the Church." My mistake of forgetting the
missing word "and" could have been confusing.
I could use this (my) typo as a lesson example of how important grammar
is and essential even in the Bible. Biblical Hebrew and Greek are
even more precise than English because they have fewer words than
English.
Case in point: Greek has at least five words that are translated
"love" in English: Agape, Phileo, Eros, Stergo, and Thelo.
There may even be a sixth but I forget, my Greek does not get used much
in retirement.
God differentiates in the larger scope of His Word, three key groups of
people: 1. Jews, 2. Gentiles, and 3. the Church. This simply
defines the three basic groups as the focus of His Word.
Most Christian scholars and interpreters have taken the "cutting off" of
Messiah in Daniel 9:26 as a reference to Jesus Christ's death.
In 9:26, After the sixty-two sevens (of years), the Anointed One (the
Messiah) would be cut off, executed because of the death penalty (cf.
Isaiah 53:8). "After" simply means some time after, and this
allows for the three and one-half years of ministry before Jesus was
crucified. At this time, there would be "nothing to Him".
This can mean He would have no successor, or it could mean that He would
be left alone.
The prophecy then jumps ahead to the people of "the prince who shall
come" after the Messiah. Since the people of this ruler to come
would destroy the city of Jerusalem and the sanctuary (the Temple), the
people must be the Romans who destroyed the city and Temple after a
long, bitter siege, in 70 AD, when Titus invaded the land. Titus
did not want the Temple destroyed, but the Jew's fierce resistance
angered the Roman soldiers, so they set it on fire. The intensity
of the fire caused the gold of the Temple's roof to melt down between
the stones, which resulted in the soldiers prying the stones apart, and
thus fulfilling the prophecy of Jesus in Matthew 24:2. Jerusalem's
end at that time did indeed come like an overflowing flood. This
would be followed by more war and more desolations or judgments of God,
for they were determined.
Brother Greg's response to you also noted the importance of the
grammatical rule concerning the "Antecedent" of "he" is "the prince who
is to come" in 9:26. The pronoun "he" requires the reader to go
back to the previous verse to learn who "he" is. Just thinking
about my seminary days outlining Hebrew and Greek gives me a headache.
Keep in mind that Titus made no covenant with Israel. We have to
ask the question then who is being referred to? Apparently, a
future ruler of the revived or reorganized Roman Empire, the "little"
horn of Daniel 7, is in view.
This is preferable to taking the antecedent of "he" as Messiah, since
Jesus did not do the things predicted of the prince here. If the
little horn of chapter 7 is in view here, as it seems preferable, and
this means that the "seventieth" week does not follow the "sixty-ninth"
week immediately. Such a break in prophetic chronology has
precedent in the predictions of Messiah's first and second advents
(Isaiah 61:1-2). Another piece of evidence that there was a
37-year gap, between Messiah's cutting off in 32/33 AD and the
destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD..
Yet Daniel presented both of these events as after the sixty-ninth week
and before the seventieth week. Thus, there must be a break in the
chronology after the sixty-ninth week. This is referred to as the
"Gap" theory or parenthesis ( ) period (which means we live
in the ( ) period. The "Septuagint"
settles any confusion or discrepancy about the accuracy or reliability
of Daniel. This is another confirming bit of evidence of the
Bible's accuracy, especially the book of Daniel. It undermines any
criticism of those saying Daniel was re-written back into the Bible, or
that it was written much later than the 5th century BC,
etc.
This future ruler, according to Gabriel, will make a covenant with "the
many" for one week of (seven) years. "The many" evidently refers
to Daniel's people in 9:24, ethnic Jews (confirmed in Daniel 11:39 and
12:2). After three and one-half years, this antichrist will
terminate the sacrifices and offerings that he permitted the Jews to
offer, in a "third" Temple. Their ability to offer these
sacrifices indicates that they will be back in the land worshipping at a
rebuilt temple.
Some posit a view there is no "third" Temple and that we are the Temple
of God. No argument here that we are the Temple of God, however,
there will be a "third" physical Jewish Temple on the Temple
Mount. Months ago I reported the fact that 60,000 tons
of Bedford, Indiana limestone was moved by railroad gondola cars from
Bedford/Madison, Indiana to Kearney, NJ for "export" to Israel by
ship. The stones were bought and paid for by the Freemasonic
"Grand Orient Lodge" of Boston, Mass. Almost daily, for several
months, between 3 and 8 railroad gondola cars passed through Pitcairn
Yard, east of Pittsburgh, PA, with cut stones of various sizes and
weights. The cars were placarded "for Kearny, NJ, export to
Israel". "Bedford Limestone" has been used for the exterior of
most federal buildings in Washington, DC, and office buildings all over
the country. When my son was a little tyke we would drive from our
apartment, a short drive away, down to the large freight classification
yard at Pitcairn, PA and watch the trains come in and depart.
Make no mistake about it, there will be a "third" physical Temple.
I can personally attest to the existence of stones cut for the new
Temple. I saw them with my own eyes. At one time I had black
and white as well as color photos of them that I had taken with my
cameras. I was a model railroader and railroad hobbyist for forty+
years. I feel blessed and consider it somewhat providential that I
was witness to this observation report about the stones and their
destination.
Keep looking up ^.
