I think Vatican City is the city of Rev 17:18 now, but it will be moved to the literal Babylon near the Euphrates River. The mention of the Euphrates and the Chaldeans in other scriptures help us to see through the glass more clearly.
Rev 17:18 says, "And the woman which thou sawest is that great CITY , which reigneth over the kings of the earth."
Rev 17:3 says, "So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness (eremos, desert, i.e., Babylon): and I saw a woman (i.e, the MYSTERY RELIGION OF BABYLON) sit upon a scarlet coloured beast (i.e., the dragon, Satan), full of names of blasphemy (PONTIFEX MAXIMUS, VICAR OF CHRIST, etc.), having seven heads (i.e., the 7th head is BABYLON III) and ten horns."
Rev 17:10 says, "And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space."

It is confusion to be sure. The "mystery" suggests Satan's MYSTERY RELIGION OF BABYLON. St. Peter's Basilica is built over the spot where the temple to Cybele, a goddess of the Mystery religion, used to be. As the Magna Mater, MOTHER OF THE GODS, she was represented by a black cube-shaped stone similar to the meteorite that is worshiped by Islam at Mecca. Cybele was often pictured with two lions. That may be why the walls of Babylon were decorated with winged lions.
This Satanic Mystery Religion began at the Tower of Babel with Nimrod, Semiramis and Tammuz. Semiramis and Tammuz were worshiped as the Madonna and child. Nimrod, and later Tammuz, were worshiped as the Sun-god. Semiramis has different names in other countries, but is essentially the same sun goddess. She and Tammuz were even called Madonna and Child. Satan tried hard to make this worship so outlandish that no one would take notice when the real thing showed up. This shows that Satan knew what was coming. He evidently even knows how much time he has left.
I immediately thought of the Sun god worship when I saw Pope Benedict holding up a monstrance, which looks to me like an emblem of the Sun. I will include a picture of that.
Cybele's face was put on Roman coins. Idols of her were placed in Roman shrines. She was called mother of the gods and queen of heaven.
At times, Israel worshipped ASHTAROTH as the QUEEN OF HEAVEN.
Jdg_2:13 says, "And they forsook the LORD, and served BAAL AND ASHTAROTH."

"Who is "Babylon", and why is the city called that?"
thanks to Donna for the research at http://www.fivedoves.com/letters/march2013/donnad327-1.htm . I do believe it is possible that Rome is Babylon, and certainly one of the leading candidates for the city of Rev 17.
Some people say that the name "Babylon" is being used in a "symbolic" sense. We really don't have to go that far. It is quite possible it is being used in a descriptive sense. The word "Babylon" means "confusion", and by calling that city "Babylon", the Scriptures could simply be calling it the city of confusion, with little to no intended link to the ancient city of Babylon.
It is also possible that the ancient city of Babylon is the city of Rev 17. In order for that to happen though, since Daniel points towards Europe as the place of origin by saying the people of the false messiah would destroy the temple, I would suspect the false messiah would likely still rise out of Europe and then move his capital there.
But it also precedes the word "Babylon" with the word "mystery". So it may simply be telling us that this city will use confusion to hide truth. Daniel tells us that truth will be thrown to the ground when the false messiah rises. So that is no surprise.

"Who is "Babylon", and why is the city called that?"
thanks to Donna for the research at http://www.fivedoves.com/letters/march2013/donnad327-1.htm . I do believe it is possible that Rome is Babylon, and certainly one of the leading candidates for the city of Rev 17.
Some people say that the name "Babylon" is being used in a "symbolic" sense. We really don't have to go that far. It is quite possible it is being used in a descriptive sense. The word "Babylon" means "confusion", and by calling that city "Babylon", the Scriptures could simply be calling it the city of confusion, with little to no intended link to the ancient city of Babylon.
It is also possible that the ancient city of Babylon is the city of Rev 17. In order for that to happen though, since Daniel points towards Europe as the place of origin by saying the people of the false messiah would destroy the temple, I would suspect the false messiah would likely still rise out of Europe and then move his capital there.
But it also precedes the word "Babylon" with the word "mystery". So it may simply be telling us that this city will use confusion to hide truth. Daniel tells us that truth will be thrown to the ground when the false messiah rises. So that is no surprise.
