Great wisdom on the 1 John passages. You did the correct thing in knowing that we are saved and knowing we still sin ,then something about the verses must make it fit. Your husband is exactly correct in referring to Paul's struggle. My goodness if the called messenger for the Gentiles still struggle with sin than surely we will too. That is why we get a new body at the rapture.
 
And since Paul is our spokesman for the Church then if it does not fit with what Paul says then we are misunderstanding something that was written to the Jews. I feel sure that during the tribulation when we are gone in the rapture that the Jews will fully understand what John is trying to say.
