"RE: Phil2 - Ephesians"

Dear Phil,

You are partially right, in that the messages are partially different.  As I explain at the beginning of my study:

It is important to understand that Jesus judged the "works" of the seven churches corporately for each passage, directed to the individual congregation. Therefore, personal Salvation is not in view in the corporate address. This is a vital note, otherwise it will appear that a works based Salvation is being taught, which is against the clear scriptural teaching of Salvation by grace only (Ephesians 2:8-9). That said, the messages to the churches conclude with a call to the individual and a promise to those that are saved.

A separate call and promise to the individual, in addition to the corporate evaluation, makes sense if the congregations consist of both true born again believers and believers "in name only". The believers "in name only" are those that are members of the church that identify themselves as Christians, but have never made a personal decision to accept Christ as their Savior.

For example, in the church of Pergamos, the congregation was guilty of compromise and so the rebuke from the Lord was directed corporately. On the other hand, it would seem out of place for Christ to offer a promise to "those who overcome", those that are, or will be, saved, if all the members in the congregation were already saved.

It will become clear as we move into the study, that not all addressed by Christ in the congregations were members of the true body of Christ. That being the case, the spiritual condition of the church, based on that of the majority of the congregation, generally will influence, to some extent, the spiritual condition of each individual member.

In other words, the messages to the overcomers ARE the same message given in Ephesians.  The rest of the letter is a corporate message to the congregation.  That is the difference.

Maranatha!
