"REGARDING EARTHQUAKES IN ALASKA AND OTHER PLACES"

Dear Doves:

I live in Alaska.  In Sarah Palin's town.  (A very small place).

We experience earthquakes every day.  Most of them too small to feel.  A 4.5 will get my attention, but rarely any damage.  I remember one that took our car down the road and brought it back by itself.  That is what we call a "good shaker".

Regarding the "big one" that was recently recorded...this big state is so big and population so sparse, it is rarely even worthy of mention by the stateside news.

We have over 80 potentially volcanoes, over half are active.  So there are times when we wear the masks and keep air filters on hand.

Here are some of the websites you can go to for earthquake information worldwide:

http://www.iris.edu/seismon/    Excellent and "as it happens" worldwide.
http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/    Alaska volcano information, plus "as it happens" seismonitors, webcams.
http://www.aeic.alaska.edu/Seis/recenteqs/index.html   Excellent "as it happens".
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/  Excellent "as it happens" in California & Nevada

Remember,  7.0 may destroy most of Christchurch, N.Z., but here in Alaska the same reading here in the "bush" would probably only make a few moose excited.
