Palestinian farmers benefit from Jewish biblical law

Jaber and thousands of Palestinian farmers across the occupied West Bank this year are expecting a surge in business this year thanks to a Jewish biblical law, “Shmita,” in Leviticus 25:3-4.

The law dictates that once every seven years all Jewish-owned fields in Israel must lie fallow and that none of their crop should be used for the duration of the year.

The Jewish year of 5768, which begins at sunset on Wednesday, is one such year, which means that tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox strictest observers of “Shmita” will have to find alternative supplies of fruits and vegetables.
