I have Hal Lindseys book, The Late Great Planet Earth.
He DID NOT say the rapture would be in 1988.
The chapter questions the start of "the generation" and the duration
of "a" generation.
On page 54 in my edition he merely says that IF a generation is 40
years and IF it started in 1948 then we should see something happen
(not necessarily the Rapture) in 1988.
This was misinterpreted by many for their own reasons...perhaps to
discredit Hal.
He has never set a date.
Remember: A lie spoken often by the right people will become the truth.

He spent 1988 pleading with people not to kill their pets that would
be left behind and not to max out their credit cards since they
wouldn't have to pay them off.
(I know I would max mine just before the rapture date.)
Some listened and some didn't.
