"Re: "Pray for early rain"
- Lacking Goodness"
Yes, it does. I've thought of this every time
I purchase bread. 90% of bread on the shelves is light, fluffy, full of
air, and if it doesn't tast like cardboard, it's often sugary. They are
without true substance that fulfills and sustains. Even the new healthier
breads with whole grains don't taste all that well, but the packaging is
great. This is compared to heartier artisan breads and presumably those
of long ago that usually came in plain packaging but it was likely made
from someone you knew on a regular basis. Compare this to today's church.
Who isn't glad when the fresh baked bread arrives in
a good restaurant or dinner party? If you're really hungry it may be difficult
not to devour the whole loaf instantly. No doubt, sharing really good bread
amongst others is a great way to fellowship and foster closeness. And treating
the word of God as the bread of our life, to be eaten every day as fellowship
with Him, likewise. Today when we consume fresh, hearty bread it stands
out so clearly from the mass produced "bread". Yet most of us still purchase
the bread that is lacking substance on most occasions as it's easier to
find, less expensive and uniform in size. We know what to expect and we
know most others will not be offended too much if we serve them from it.
This is what has happened to the church...it's watered down or jazzed up
with sugar to be consumed by the masses but is lacking in fulfillment and
often doesn't achieve it's purpose in our lives. Enough of the right fiber
(which cleanses and purifies us)...just isn't usually there.

And again I began to understand how in many churches
in today's world man has devised a way to bring a harvest of people into
the church. Using ideas such as the "prosperity gospel" and the Me..Me..Me
kind of teaching that portrays God as an end to our selfish desires. Some
churches have organised "Foot Ball Nights" with beer and popcorn and wrestling
matches inside the church, all in a attempt to lure the masses of people
to come in. These people are somewhat like what these new man made techniques
are producing in our modern day farming techniques. With all of this early
planting and accelerated growth products and pesticides man has produced
vegetables that look real and somewhat taste real, but they lack all of
the goodness and nutrients that once were in our vegetables. They have
a form of and look like real vegetables but lack the goodness. Kind of
sounds like scripture doesn't it?
