Where does this notion of dialogue with evil come from?
 
Stephen, your point is excellent, but I would venture to say that the dialogue with evil started in the garden of Eden, with the author of death and lies.  Every conversation from that point on has been inspired by the same entity seeking the same result; exultation of a creature over the Creator.
