Rabbi Yosef Instructs Shas to Press for Anti-Missionary Law

(IsraelNN.com) Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the rabbinical authority of the Shas party, instructed Shas chairman Minister Eli Yishai to propose a new law that would strictly forbid missionary activity in Israel. Rabbi Yosef's instructions were issued during a three-way meeting between the rabbi, Yishai and Rabbi Shalom Dov Lifschitz, director of the Yad L'Achim counter-missionary organization.

The proposed law recommended to Shas by Rabbi Lifschitz would be non-discriminatory, applicable regardless of the religions involved: "A Christian would be prohibited from persuading a Jew or a Muslim to convert, a Muslim would be prohibited from persuading a Christian or a Jew to convert, and a Jew would be prohibited from persuading a Christian and a Muslim to convert," Rabbi Lifschitz explained.
