"Sore Spiritual Muscles"
One night, my son told me his leg was sore.
My first thought was to get the heating pad. That often helps.
But then he told me WHY his legs were sore. He told me he had done
more running yesterday than he was accustomed to, so he was just trying
to take it easy today until it got better.
BAD MOVE!!! I told him the best thing fore
muscles that are sore due to over-doing something is to go out and do it
again! Just not as much. If you ran 2 miles and it made you
sore, go run 1 quarter mile, and your muscles will loosen up faster than
if you do nothing. If you lifted too much weight in the gym, go out
and just try lifting half or 3/4 that amount. If you did 20 reps,
just do 10. But do EXACTLY THE SAME EXCERCISE that got you sore,
just don't do as much.
My Dad was there when I said that and he agreed with
me. That was followed by yet someone else who said, "That's what
my father always said. If you are sore from chopping too much wood,
go out and chop some more, just not as much." So he went out and
ran a little. When he came back, my other son asked him "are you
still sore" He said, " A little, but not as much."
Spiritual muscles are the same way. Are you burnt
out from ministry? Don't drop out. Get out there and do it
again. Do a little less this time. Like running too much or
lifting too much weight - what you discovered was where your limits are,
and you went over them. So do a little less and try to work up to
that. Did you fail a spiritual test? Try to take it again
- just try a smaller one this time. Then a slightly bigger one.
And then a bigger one. Soon, you'll be passing bigger tests than
you failed before.
Spiritually, we grow and mature, and you can't send a
baby believer out to fight an adult battle. As you stretch and grow,
you'll learn new boundaries, you'll lift spirtitual weights and devevlop
spiritual muscles. Falling short here and there tells you where your
limits are. Use those experiences wisely to learn more about yourself.
Don't beat yourself up over it, but don't try to push yourself farther
than you know you can go too. Use those periods of sore spiritual
muscles wisely, and soon, they will develop into bigger muscles.
Shalom, Joe
