At least 20 people along the northeast coast of Florida called to report the sighting about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Coast Guard officials said.
An off-duty police officer from Palm Bay walking his dog was among the first.
"He said it looked like a huge flaming ball that went off into the horizon," said Daniel Yates, a Coast Guard petty officer in Port Canaveral.
