Want peace?

Dear friends:

One of the verses I memorized years ago, and still confess out loud often is Isaiah 26:3: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed onthee: because he trusteth in thee" (KJV).

The New Living Translation says, "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you!"

Did you know that the sacred Hebrew text here does not actually say "perfect peace"?  It really says "shalom shalom."  The word shalom, Hebrew for peace, is repeated here for emphasis.  It is a dramatic double emphasis.  When God gives double emphasis to anything, we would be wise to take it very seriously.

But did you also know that the Hebrew word shalom doesn't just mean peace as we think of peace?  According to Strong's Enhanced Lexicon, the word communicates many wonderful meanings and promises of God, such as welfare, prosperity, safety, health, completeness, soundness, quietness, tranquillity, and contentment.  Think about each of these.  This is profound, and a well-kept secret!  The world and most Christians do not understand the treasure chest of blessings contained in God's Word.

It is clear from this passage and many, many others that it is God's perfect will that we have all these wonderful blessings of shalom.  But it is also a scriptural principle that such blessings are not always automatic, but that we receive them from God by faith -- by trusting.  That is why the verse reads that the promise applies to, "all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you!"

Are your thoughts fixed on Jesus?  Do you trust Him completely?  Then the promises are yours.  They were paid for at the cross.  "The chastisement of our peace (shalom) was upon him" (Isaiah 53:5).

Receive your paid-in-full blessings today.

Here is a good prayer: "Father, thank you for your shalom shalom, paid for by my Lord Jesus at the cross.  Thank you, Jesus, for what you did for me.  I receive all these blessings today, and no devil will talk me out of them.  In Jesus' name.  Amen."
