The Hebrew Slave…..

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the form of God  [John 1:1-2; 4:24], thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But made Himself of no reputation [emptied; poured Himself out…Textus Receptus], and took upon Him the form of a servant [doulos…slave], and was made in the likeness of men:

And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name:

     That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

                                                                                     Philippians 2:5-11

Introduction

Dear reader, how do you think of or visualize the Lord Jesus Christ?  If you are a true believer, you likely visualize Him as the Lord God who became man in order to pay for the sins of lost humanity.  Indeed He did!  Yet do you think of Him only as “Diety” as He carried out His ministry on earth?  Or has the God of Heaven given you a real grasp of WHO Christ chose to become and WHAT He willingly chose to give up in order to suffer and die at Calvary to pay your sin debt and mine?

The text for this study explicitly states and teaches that the Lord Jesus Christ existed in eternity past “in the form of God.”  But it also states and teaches that He “emptied or poured Himself out” of that form, and took upon Himself the form of a servant [doulos…slave], and was made [Hebrews 10:5-7] in the likeness of men.”  Then as “a slave” He became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”  Have you ever thought of Christ giving up all the glories of Heaven and choosing to come to earth to suffer and die as a lowly “slavebecause of His love for lost mankind?  No?  Then think about it!

It is a sad truth that even most true believers have never thought of Christ from this viewpoint at all.  Does the Bible really teach that the Lord Jesus Christ became “a slave” in order that we believers might become“kings,” Revelation 1:5-6; 5:8-10?  Yes it does!  In 2 Corinthians 8:9  the Scripture explicitly states, “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.”  Now let’s study this truth in more depth…….

THE LAW OF THE HEBREW SLAVE

I want to set before our readers one of God’s laws which most readers have never read, have overlooked, or have simply ignored.  It is a sad truth that most New Covenant believers never bother to study the Old Covenant of the Law simply because we New Covenant believers are not “under the Law.”  It is Scriptural truth that New Covenant

1

believers are not “under the Law,” yet some seem to forget that the Old Testament is still a part of the inspired Word of God, and much is to be learned about our Heavenly Father and our beloved Savior from studying the Law which God gave to Israel under the Old Covenant.  Remember that the Lord Himself explicitly stated, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled,” Matthew 5:17-18.  Since the Lord explicitly stated that He came to “fulfill” the Law, this obviously includes The Law of the Hebrew Slave. Remember also that in 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 we are explicitly told that everything which happened to Israel under the Old Covenant “happened unto them for examples [typos…types]: and they are written for our admonition [instruction], upon whom the ends of the world  [aion…age] are come.”  This being the case, then let’s seriously look at The Law of the Hebrew Slave…..

The Law of the Hebrew Slave is set forth in both Exodus 21:1-6 and Deuteronomy 15:12-18.   Our readers should carefully read both of these inspired portions of Scripture in order to get every detail of this Law.  The terms and conditions of this Law were…..

1.     That the Hebrew slave was to serve his master for six years.

2.     That at the end of six years he was to be given his freedom by his master, Exodus 21:2; Deuteronomy 15:12.

3.    That his marital state was to be taken into consideration at the time he became a slave.  If he was single [not married] when he began his servitude, he would also be set free at the end of the six years as a single man.  However, if he was married when he became a slave to his master, then at the end of his six years of service his wife would be set free with him, Exodus 21:3.

4.    That during the years of his service to his master, if his master gave him a wife, then at the end of the six years his wife and any children born to them would belong to his master.  He would be set free without his wife and children, Exodus 21:4.

5.    That at the end of his six years of service his master was to give him “liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the Lord thy God hath blessed thee,” remembering that the Jews had once been slaves in Egypt and the Lord God had graciously redeemed them, Deuteronomy 15:14-15.

6.    That at the end of his six years of service, or at some point during those years, he had the legal right to make a choice about leaving his master’s service or remaining as his master’s slave for ever.  His choice could be made in view of his love for his master, his love for his wife which his master had given him, and his love for his children born to him and his wife during the time of his servitude, Exodus 21:5; Deuteronomy 15:16.

7.    That if he chose to renounce his freedom and remain in the service of his master, then he was to be brought before the judges as a public declaration of his choice, and his master would then bring him to a door or to a door post and “bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever,” Exodus 21:6; Deuteronomy 15:16-17.

8.    That if the Hebrew slave chose to be set free, his master would send him away without any hard feelings, because he had served his master well and had “been worth a double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years,” Deuteronomy 15:18.

It is obvious that this Law of the Hebrew Slave served at least three purposes…..

[1] - Almighty God knew that among fallen men there would always be slavery.  He

2

knew that some men would be so evil that they would spend their lives seeking to enslave

and control other men.  This has been true throughout human history and it is still true today!  Therefore to the Jewish people the Lord gave this righteous law to regulate slavery.

[2]   Almighty God also knew that some men, due to their own lack of wisdom, or due to severe economic conditions or unforeseen calamity or misfortune coming into their lives, would lose everything the Lord had blessed them with and would sell themselves into bondage to others in order to survive.   So again the Lord God gave this righteous law to the Jewish people to show them how they were to deal with and treat their own Jewish brethren who became their slaves.

[3] - Almighty God, in His great wisdom, used this Law of the Hebrew Slave to set forth in type His own wonderful Plan of the Ages and to exalt His Son in the hearts and minds of His people who are willing to seriously study His Word and search out the great truths He has set forth in it, Proverbs 2:1-7.  Glory be to God!  Praise the Lord!  Hallelujah!

It is this third purpose for the Law of the Hebrew Slave which I want to set before our readers in this study.  Now let’s turn our attention to the true identity of…….

THE HEBREW SLAVE

The Transition from God to Man…..How often do our readers seriously think about what the Lord Jesus Christ personally sacrificed to become man and our Savior?  Our text for this study tells us that rather than taking advantage of His position of equality, coexisting with God and being God [John 1:1-2], the Lord Jesus actually and literally “poured out” [emptied] of Himself His equality with His Father in order to take upon Himself the body and limitations of mankind.  As if that wasn’t enough He chose to limit Himself even further by yielding up His own will to His Father and becoming an obedient slave to carry out His Father’s will, Philippians 2:7; Romans 5:19.

No, this is not just my opinion, my theory, or my “interpretation!”  I am not giving myself up to an over active imagination.  What I am setting forth here is absolute Scriptural truth!  Right at the beginning  of His personal ministry the Lord Himself explicitly stated, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He [the Father] doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise,” John 5:19.

Again the Lord said, “I can of Mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and My judgment is just; because I seek not Mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent Me,” John 5:30.

Then in John 8:28-29  we read, “Then Jesus said unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father hath taught Me, I speak these things.  And He that sent Me is with Me: the Father hath not left Me alone; for I do always those things that please Him.”

This may amaze some readers, but the Lord Himself clearly stated that He was not the  source of even the things which He spoke and taught.  Oh yes He did!  “Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine [teaching] is not Mine, but His that sent Me.  If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of Myself.  He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but He that seeketh His glory that sent Him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him,” John 7:16-18.

These Scriptures and others which I could also refer to, make it quite clear that the Lord was expressly carrying out His Father’s will as His “obedient servant” [slave].  And when did this “transition” from the Lord’s original position as God in Spirit to His chosen position as man and as a “slave” actually occur?  Listen as the Lord Himself prays to His Father in Heaven, “And now, O Father, glorify Thou Me with Thine own Self with the glory which I had with Thee before the

3

world was,” John 17:5.  Did you hear it?  The Lord did not give up His glory with the Father when He was born as a babe in Bethlehem.  The Lord gave up His glory with the Heavenly Father before the world was in order to carry out the Heavenly Father’s great Plan of the Ages, in creating all things, and then in redeeming the creation which the Godhead knew would come under the dominion of Satan and sin, for the Godhead [Acts 17:24-30] knew the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:9-10.  The Hebrew slave then portrayed in type in Exodus 21:1-6  and Deuteronomy 15:12-18 is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself!  Glory to God!  Thank you Lord Jesus for loving your people that much!  Hallelujah!  Praise the Lord!

The Creation and the Creator…….It should be obvious to our readers that “Elohim;” the Triune Godhead, existed BEFORE the creation.  The whole creation is made of matter; atoms; protons; neutrons; molecules; etc.  Matter can be either visible or invisible, but it is still matter!  But “Elohim;” the Godhead; Almighty God, is not matter!  God is Spirit and the origin of all created matter and the source of life, John 1:1-4; 4:24.  God existed before any creation was ever spoken into existence, Genesis 1:1; 1:3; Hebrews 11:3.    If this “blows the minds” of some of our readers don’t feel bad.  I can’t comprehend or explain it either, yet I KNOW it to be true, not only because it  is set forth in God’s inspired Word [John 16:12-15; 1 Corinthians 1:11-16], but because I have a personal saving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.  Remember, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him[God], for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him,” Hebrews 11:6.

This may also “blow the minds” of some of our readers, but the very first act of creation was not the creation of the heavens and the earth.  Rather, the very first act of creation was the creation of the Creator.  In Revelation 3:14 the Lord Himself explicitly stated, “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write:  These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.”  The word “beginning” in this passage is translated from the Greek word, “arche.”  This Greek word literally means, “that by which anything begins to be; the origin, active cause.”  See Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, pages 76-77, Strong’s No. 746.  Another  confirmation of this truth is found in Colossians 1:15 which in the context is plainly speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ, “Who is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of every creature:”   The word “first-born” in this passage is translated from the Greek word, “prototokos.”  This Greek word literally means, “the first-born whether of man or of beasts; Christ…who came into being through God prior to the entire universe of created things; the firstborn of all creation.”  See Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, pages 555-556, Strong’s No. 4416.  Both of these two inspired passages point out that at some point in eternity past the eternal pre-existent “logos [John 1:1-2; 1:14] took upon Himself a created body in which He thereby became “the beginning of the creation of God.”

Once the Lord Jesus Christ clothed Himself with His own created body, according to the Devine will of the Heavenly Father [John 5:19-20; 5:30], He then as the “servant” [slave] of His Father created all things, Psalm 33:6; John 1:3; Ephesians 3:9; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:2; 1:10.

However, do not overlook the truth that the entire Godhead worked in the process of creation, Genesis 1:1; 1:-2; 1:26.  The plan of creation originated with the Heavenly Father.  The Father’s plan of creation was then carried out by the Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s chosen Creator.  The spirit of life [life force] was then implanted in the creation by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, thus bringing forth a “living creation.”  Glory to God!  Praise the Lord!

Now having set forth this brief explanation of the transition of Christ, and of how creation came to be, let’s see how the terms and conditions of the Law of the Hebrew Slave apply to the Lord Jesus Christ…….

The Length of Servitude…….The Law of the Hebrew Slave explicitly states that the slave was to serve his master for “six years,” Exodus 21:2; Deuteronomy 15:12.

There is no question that the “six years” of servitude for the Hebrew slave typifies the six

4

thousand years of human history.  Several times in the Scriptures certain periods of time, whether a number of days or a period of years, are explicitly stated to typify a much longer period of time in which God’s prophetic Word was to be fulfilled.   See and compare Genesis 1:3-31 and 2:1-3 with 2 Peter 3:8 and also Hosea 6:1-2.  See also Numbers 14:32-34 as another example.  Yet another example of this truth is found in Ezekiel 4:4-6, which should also be compared with Numbers 26:21-28 where the Lord God explicitly told the Jewish people four times that if they continued to walk contrary to Him, He would multiply their punishment seven times.  It is then no stretch of the Scriptures to understand that the six years of servitude for the Hebrew slave represents or typifies

the six thousand years of human history in which the Lord Jesus Christ has been carrying out His Father’s will.

Four thousand years [four days in God’s great week or four years in the servitude of the Hebrew slave] after the creation of Adam the Lord Jesus Christ came into the world as man in order to offer Himself as a sacrifice for sin, Matthew 26:39; Mark 14:36; John 5:30.  After His crucifixion and resurrection He has continued to carry out His Father’s will over these past 2,000 years [2 days in God’s great week or two years of servitude] in order to redeem fallen mankind and all creation from the bondage of sin.  Glory to God!

The first 4,000 years of human history from Adam to the first coming of Christ correlate with the first four years of servitude by the Hebrew slave.  Then these past 2,000 years of this present dispensation correlate with the next two years of servitude by the Hebrew slave.  Add these two periods together and it completes 6,000 years of human history and correlates with the six years of servitude by the Hebrew slave.   Then according to the Law of the Hebrew Slave, it is time for the slave to be set free!   In other words, the time has arrived for Christ to renounce His role as the Hebrew slave, put off His humanity, and return to His position of co-equality in the Divine Godhead as Spirit God, John 1:1-2; 4:24.  But has He done so?  Will He ever do so?

Let’s look further into the Lord’s fulfillment of the Law of the Hebrew slave…….

The Marital State…….The Law specifically stated that the marital state of the slave was to be taken into consideration, Exodus 21:3-4.

[1]   If the slave was married when he became a slave, then at the end of the six years he would be given his freedom along with his wife and his children.   [2]  If the slave was not married when he became a slave, then at the end of the six years of his servitude he was to be given his freedom in the same single state [unmarried] in which he became a slave.   [3]   A third option was that if the Hebrew slave was given a wife by his master during the course of his servitude, then at the end of his six years of servitude he was still to be given his freedom, but the wife given to him and any children born to their union would remain the property of his master.

When this Law is typically applied to Christ, it is then obvious that Christ was single when He took upon Himself the role of the Hebrew slave to carry out His Father’s will.   Therefore, according to the Law of the Hebrew Slave, the Lord Jesus Christ is to be set free from His servitude as man in a single state!  This means that Christ is to be set free from His role as the Hebrew slave with no bride, no wife, no children, no further obligation to mankind whatsoever!   The Lord Jesus Christ has carried out and accomplished His Father’s will during these past six thousand years [6 years of servitude] and His obligation to mankind is over, finished, done, and completed.  He is totally free to lay aside His humanity and return to His glorious position in the Godhead.  Think about it!  Let the magnitude of this truth sink into your very soul.

The Choice…….However, the Law also gave the Hebrew slave a “legal” right to make a choice for himself, Exodus 21:5; Deuteronomy 15:16.

When Christ came into the world at His first coming, He was not sent to the Gentiles!  If one carefully studies the Gospel of Matthew, salvation was not even offered to anyone other than the Jewish people until Matthew 10:32.  This is the first place in the Book of Matthew where the Lord

5

explicitly said, Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven.”  In this statement, the possibility of salvation for others than the Jewish people was first set forth by the Lord in Matthew’s gospel.  But even then the door to salvation for the Gentiles was not opened by the Lord Jesus Christ until in Matthew 11:28-30 the Lord explicitly invited, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest….”   In this passage the Lord Jesus Christ actually invited “all” to come to Him without making

any distinction between Jews and Gentiles.   Oh glory to God!  Praise the Lord!  Hallelujah!

Yet still the Lord did not begin preaching to the Gentiles.  Then in Matthew 12 He was blasphemed and rejected by the religious leaders of Israel.  Read the chapter for yourself.  It was following His blasphemous rejection by those who were regarded as the “spiritual” leaders of Israel, that the Lord then said, “Who is My mother?  and who are My brethren?  And He stretched forth His hand toward His disciples, and said, Behold My mother and My brethren!  For whosoever shall do the will of My Father which is in heaven, the same is My brother, and sister, and mother,” Matthew 12:48-50.  Right here the door of salvation was opened to every truly seeking soul to come to salvation in Christ.  Glory to God!  Hallelujah!

This truth is demonstrated two chapters later, when Matthew 15:21-28 records the first account in Matthew of a Gentile actually coming to Christ.  Who was the Gentile who came to Christ on this occasion?  A despised Canaanite woman!  A Syro-Phoenician!  She came to the Lord in faith, crying out to Him, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil,” 15:22.  Her cry makes it clear that she had previously heard about  the Lord [Romans 10:17], and truly believed Him to be the promised Messiah of Israel and a direct descendant of King David, Isaiah 11:1-4; Jeremiah 23:5-6. She was obviously familiar with the Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures.  The Word tells us that at first Christ didn’t even answer her cry, 15:23.  The Lord’s Jewish disciples were so embarrassed by this despised Gentile woman crying after the Lord that they asked Him to send her away, 15:23.  Instead the Lord answered her by explicitly saying, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel,” 15:24.  How much plainer could it be stated?  Nevertheless this Gentile woman, so despised by the Jews, humbly came and worshiped the Lord, again asking Him for help, 15:25.  The Lord then emphasized once more that He had been sent only to the Jewish people by saying to the woman, “It is not meet [right; proper] to take the children’s bread [Israel], and to cast it to dogs [Gentiles],” 15:26.   This statement of the Lord was a display of the attitude that the Jews as a people held towards the Gentiles [and which some Jews still hold even today].  But this Jewish slur against the Gentiles did not deter this Gentile woman.   She humbly answered the Lord by saying, “You have spoken the truth, Lord: yet the puppy dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master’s table” [literal paraphrase of the Greek text], 15:27.  The Lord honored her faith, her humility, and her persistence by saying to her, “O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt,” 15:28.  It is this account in the Gospel of Matthew that clearly illustrates that the door of salvation was now open to the Gentiles.  I suggest that our readers compare Mark 7:24-30.  Praise the Lord!

I have taken the time in this study to show the progression of the Lord from ministering only to the Jews to whom He had been sent, to also extending His love and compassion and mercy to the Gentiles.  Remember that the Law of the Hebrew Slave explicitly states that during the servitude of the Hebrew slave, “If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself,” Exodus 21:4.  This is exactly what the Heavenly Father did during the personal ministry of our Lord; He gave His Hebrew slave a deep love for the Gentiles, so much so that the Lord chose a “bride” for Himself from among the Gentiles.   But this “love” was mutual between the Lord and His chosen Gentile bride!  The Lord never forces anyone to come to Him.  Rather, salvation in Christ and our degree of love for Him is a matter of choice.  I urge every reader to study again the beautiful type set forth in Genesis 24 where Abraham [a type of the Heavenly Father] sent his servant [a type of the Holy Spirit] to a Gentile country to find a bride for his son, Isaac [a type of Christ].  Notice

6

carefully that Rebekah [a type of the bride of Christ] was explicitly asked, “Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go,” Genesis 24:58.  Rebekah made a choice of her own will.   Even so, the Lord Himself confidently stated, “All that the Father giveth Me shall come to Me….,” John 6:37.  Read also the promise the Lord made in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and

thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”  Glory to God!  Hallelujah!

This is exactly what has been happening during this present “dispensation of grace.”  The Holy

Spirit of God has been calling out of the Gentile nations of the earth a “bride” for the Son of God; the Lord Jesus Christ, the Heavenly Father’s beloved Hebrew slave.  The Holy Spirit calls lost men and women, boys and girls, to come to Christ by convincing [convicting] them of the reality of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment [John 16:7-11] and setting before them “the way” of salvation, thereby giving them an opportunity to make their own choice about receiving Christ as their personal Savior.   No one is ever forced to choose Christ as their Savior!  But when one does choose to receive Christ, they are “born again” of the Spirit of God [John 3:3-8; 1 Peter 1:2; 1:23; Galatians 5:22-25] and “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us,” Romans 5:5.  Remember that in the account in Genesis 24, Rebekah had never laid eyes on Isaac, yet she set her heart upon him to love him and become his bride and his wife.  So the Scriptures explicitly state of Christ in relation to true New Covenant believers, “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory,” 1 Peter 1:8.

Just as true believers freely make their own choice to receive Christ, so the beloved Hebrew slave was also given the “legal” right to make His choice.  The Law of the Hebrew slave explicitly states, “And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,” Exodus 21:5.  See also Deuteronomy 15:16.  In other words, the Hebrew slave could “legally” choose to renounce his freedom and remain with his wife and children and continue to serve as his master’s slave “for ever,” Exodus 21:6.  I hope every reader lets the magnitude of this truth soak in to your very soul.  This is the choice our precious Lord made before He left this earth some 2,000 years ago.  He did not wait until the end of His six years [6,000 years] of servitude to make that choice.  He made it during His personal ministry.  For the love of Israel, for the love of His Gentile “bride,” for the love of all the children of God begotten by the Spirit of God [1 Peter 1:3],  for His love for your soul and mine, the Lord Jesus Christ renounced His “legal right” to lay aside His humanity and return to His position as Spirit God [John 1:1-2; 4:24; Philippians 2:6], and He made that choice before He ascended back to His Father.

When did the Lord, the beloved Hebrew slave, make that choice?  Look now with spiritual eyes at the Lord Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.  Watch as the Lord pours the “fruit of the vine” into a cup according to the wedding customs of the Jews, keeping in mind that Christ in His humanity was a Jewish male.  Watch as the Lord offered that cup to His eleven apostles and urged them all to drink of it, Matthew 26:27-29; Mark 14:23-25.  What was the spiritual significance of this in relation to Christ and His chosen “bride”?   As a Jewish male the Lord was proposing marriage to the one whom He had chosen to be His “bride,” knowing full well that “His church” would ultimately become a Gentile bride.   According to the Jewish marriage customs, if His chosen accepted the cup from His hand and drank of it, she [yes the church is “feminine” in the Scriptures] was accepting His proposal of marriage and from that day forth would be His “espoused bride” [engaged; betrothed] until the day of their marriage.  Read again 2 Corinthians 11:2.  The Lord’s apostles that day [the foundation upon which the church was built; Ephesians 2:19-22] did drink of the cup, thereby accepting the Lord’s proposal of marriage.  Glory to God!  Hallelujah!  Praise the Lord!

But something else was occurring that day which the apostles were not even aware of at the time!  Our beloved Hebrew slave was of His own will choosing to renounce His former position of   co-equality in the Godhead, and was making a choice to remain in the position of “a slave…..for ever,” Exodus 21:6; Deuteronomy 15:17.  Why would He make such a choice?  Read it for yourself, “I love my Master, My wife, and My children; I will not go out free,” Exodus 21:5; Deuteronomy

7

15:16.  Read Hebrews 2:11-13.  Since I presently dwell in a body of flesh that still retains a fallen “sin nature” [Romans 7:18], I cannot comprehend such love as Christ displayed for my soul and yours that day, yet I am so thankful that through His saving grace I can experience His love for me, Ephesians 3:14-21.  Praise the Lord for such love shown by Christ towards the undeserving sons of men.  Thank you Lord Jesus!  Praise Your Holy Name!  Hallelujah!  Glory to God!

Oh no!  I can almost hear some of our readers saying that this just cannot be so!  They have been taught all their lives that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are all co-equal in the Godhead, so according to them, what I am setting before my readers here just cannot be so!  Is that so?  Are you really certain about that?   Well let’s just see what the inspired Word has to say about the matter.

Some 30 years after Christ had ascended back to the Father the inspired Apostle wrote, “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God,” 1 Corinthians 11:3.  Notice that it is positions of authority, rank, or submission which is being pointed out in this verse and even in the context.  Also notice that the statement is made in the present tense.   So long after Christ had ascended back to the Father in Heaven, the inspired Word doesn’t place Him as being co-equal with the Father.  Rather, it places Him in submission to the Father, just as the wife is to be in submission to her husband, and her husband is to be in submission to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Hello!

But this is not the only Scripture which teaches this truth!  Again, long after Christ had ascended back to His Father, the inspired Apostle wrote to Timothy, “For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,” 1 Timothy 2:5.  Again, this Scripture is written in the present tense.  The inspired Apostle explicitly spoke of Christ in the present tense as “the man.” In other words, this Scripture tells us that Christ is still dwelling in His human body in Heaven.   The body of Christ is now a “glorified” human body, nevertheless it is still a human body.  The Lord has not laid aside His humanity!  In His glorified humanity He is right now mediating between God and men.  Praise the Lord!  Glory to God!  Hallelujah!

The Consequences of the Choice…….There was a price to be paid for making such a choice!  The Law of the Hebrew Slave stated that the slave was to be brought before the judges.  There before the judges the slave would make a public declaration of his love for his master, for his wife, and for his children, thereby publicly renouncing his freedom and choosing to remain in the service of his master.   His master would then publicly take him to a door and placing his ear against the door post, would “bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever,” Exodus 21:6; Deuteronomy 15:17.

How does this apply to the Lord Jesus Christ?  Perhaps a better question would be, “How does it

not  apply to our beloved Savior?”

Anyone who studies the gospels with spiritual eyes can read the record for themselves.  The Lord Jesus Christ was well aware of the choice He had made and the consequences involved in His choice, for in the Garden of Gethsemane the Lord earnestly prayed, “O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt,” Matthew 26:39.  But just as the  Hebrew slave was in obedience to his master, so the Lord was perfectly reconciled to carry out His Father’s will.  Listen as again the Lord prayed, “O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, except I drink it, Thy will be done,” Matthew 26:42.  Let it soak into the very heart and  soul of our readers that Christ was not making this choice for Himself, but rather because of His love and concern for fallen mankind, His love for His own Jewish brethren, and the very special love He had for His chosen Gentile bride, Daniel 9:26; Romans 5:6-11; Acts 20:28; Ephesians 5:22-32.

Christ was then arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane and taken before “the judges;” Caiaphas,

Annas, Pilate and Herod.  Don’t fail to notice that it was within the power of Pilate or of Herod to set Him free, and the Scriptures tell us that Pilate even desired to do so, Matthew 27:15-24; Mark 15:6-14; Luke 23:1-24; John 19:1-16.  Why then wasn’t the Lord set free?

8

The Law of the Hebrew slave explicitly says, “Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever,” Exodus 21:6; Deuteronomy 15:17.  Now let’s see again how this Law of the Hebrew slave applied to the Lord Jesus Christ…..

The Scriptures explicitly state, “Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God [the Father], and afflicted,” Isaiah 53:4.

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord [the Father] hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all,” Isaiah 53:6.

“Yet it pleased the Lord [the Father] to bruise Him; He [the Father] hath put Him to grief: when Thou [the Father] shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord [the Father] shall prosper in His hand.

He [the Father] shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My righteous servant [slave] justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities,” Isaiah 53:10-11.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son , that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3:16.

It ought to be obvious that it was the will of the Heavenly Father Himself that His Own precious Hebrew slave should pay the sin debt for Adam’s fallen race at Calvary.   It was the Father, not Pilate or Herod, who made the decision to bring our precious Lord to “the door” of salvation for mankind.  What do I mean?  1 Corinthians 1:18 explicitly states, “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”  Folks, it is still the blood stained cross of Christ which is “the door” of salvation for every truly seeking soul.  As the old hymn says, “There is no other way, but the way of the cross leads home.”   Glory to God!  Praise the Lord!  Hallelujah!  Thank you Father!  Thank you Lord Jesus!

Remember that before leading Christ away to be crucified the Roman soldiers weaved “a crown of thorns” and placed it on the head of the Lord Jesus, bowing their knees before Him and mocking Him, Matthew 27:27-31.  These thorns were gathered from the wild thorn bushes which grow in the holy land.  The thorns on these bushes grow to be six to eight inches in length.  A “crown of thorns” woven from these bushes would be a terrible object.  This “crown” was placed on the head of Christ by the Roman soldiers.  Then what some miss is the simple statement, “And they spit upon

Him, and took the reed, and smote Him on the head.”  There is no question that being struck on the head with the reed would have driven the thorns into the skin beneath the Lord’s scalp and downward into His ear lobes, causing excruciating pain.   Go back and read the Law of the Hebrew slave again, then look at the prophecy of Christ found in Isaiah 50:4-6, “The Lord God hath opened Mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.  I gave My back to the smiters, and My cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not My face from shame and spitting.”  Read also Psalm 40:6-8.  Oh thank you Lord Jesus, for caring that much for my soul!  Remember dear reader, “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins,” 1 John 4:10.  Glory to God!  Hallelujah!

The Blessings of the Choice…….Notice carefully that the Law of the Hebrew Slave explicitly states, “And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty:  Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the Lord thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him,” Deuteronomy 15:13-14.

“It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee in serving thee six years: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all that thou doest,” Deuteronomy 15:18.

Now let’s see how this part of the Law of the Hebrew Slave applies to the Lord…..

The Heavenly Father did not take lightly the terrible suffering of His Son at Calvary.  Just as the

9

Hebrew slave obeyed his master, so the Lord Jesus obeyed His Father’s will and gave Himself as the Supreme Sacrifice for the redemption of fallen mankind, Romans 5:18-21.  I can easily believe that the Father wept as He turned His back and refused to look upon His Son’s suffering that day, “For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him,” 2 Corinthians 5:21; Psalm 22:1; Habakkuk 1:13.

Don’t fail to notice that the Law of the Hebrew Slave explicitly says, “…for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee in serving thee six years…”  Why is this statement important?   Many years ago I made a study of the word “double” everywhere it occurs in the Bible.  To say that I was shocked, grieved, humbled, and overwhelmed by what I found is an understatement.  What I found was that the Lord Jesus Christ not only paid the sin debt of humanity as He suffered and died on Calvary, but that He made “double” payment for the sins of fallen mankind.  This means that He actually suffered “double” for your sins and mine.  How much every true believer ought to love the Lord for suffering and dying in our place, bearing our sin debt in His own body, and paying “double” what was required.  Now read the Lord’s admonition to His disciples in Matthew 5:38-41 and let the Spirit of Christ speak to your heart.     Praise His precious Name!  Glory to God!

Now look carefully at what our text for this study explicitly states,

“And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  Wherefore [because of this; for this reason] God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name:  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father,” Philippians 2:9-11.

Now let’s tie together some Biblical truths in Scriptural harmony.  I have already set before our readers the choice that the Lord Himself made to remain in His humanity, as His Father’s servant, with His chosen bride, “for ever.”   There was no way the Father Himself would deny His Son’s choice.  Since the Son Himself made the choice to renounce His freedom to lay aside His humanity and return to co-equality as Spirit God in the Godhead, what was the Father to do?  What does the

text here in Philippians 2 plainly say that the Father did?

Following are just some of the blessings [there is no way I could list them all] bestowed upon the Lord Jesus Christ, the Heavenly Father’s Hebrew slave, because the Lord chose to obey His Father even unto death.  Think about it!

[1]  The Lord Jesus Christ was Promoted in His Father’s Kingdom…….Because the Father could not restore Christ to a co-equal position in the Godhead, the Father  chose to exalt the name of Christ to a position even above His Own Name.  Isn’t this exactly what is stated in Philippians 2:9?  Don’t “hem or haw” around.  Just face the truth which is explicitly stated.  The Father gave to Christ a name which is above every name.”  This means that the Heavenly Father chose to exalt the name of His Son and obedient slave above the name of every false god, every angel and every being that is named in heaven and earth, and even above His Own Name.  This is why every lost seeking soul must come to God through the name and person of Christ, Acts 4:12.  This is why the Lord Himself could truthfully say, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me,” John 14:6.  This is why the Apostle Paul spent three years in Ephesus testifying to both Jews and Gentiles that salvation only comes through “repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ,” Acts 20:21.

Folks, “religious people” can believe in the existence of God and even call on God (or their choice of gods) in prayer.  Millions all over the earth in various religions do so every day.  But believing that God really exists and using His name in prayer or speaking in His Name in order to appear “godly” to others won’t obtain even a drop of water in Hell for anyone.  Remember that the inspired Word explicitly states, “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils [demons] also believe, and tremble,” James 2:19.  It is absolutely certain that “the devils” [demons], even though

10

they know God is real, are never going to submit to Him and be saved.   No one can ignore, circumvent, or outright deny the Lord Jesus Christ and ever expect to be saved.  Their efforts will avail them NOTHING!  The Heavenly Father Himself has decreed that no member of Adam’s race can come to Him except they come to Him through a believing, saving faith in His Son.  No exceptions for anyone!  Period!

Is this too hard for some of our readers to grasp?  Well let’s just see if there is further proof of this truth in God’s Word.  Remember that the inspired Word explicitly states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  The same was in the beginning with God,” John 1:1-2.  Then in verse 14 the Scripture states, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”  Any true believer knows that these references to “the Word” are describing the Lord Jesus Christ in His pre-existence in the Godhead, and then His becoming flesh to dwell among men.   Now look at Psalm 138:2, “I will worship toward Thy holy temple, and praise Thy name for Thy loving kindness and for Thy truth: for Thou hast magnified Thy Word above all Thy name.”  Is this stated clearly enough?  This is just one of many such Scriptures in God’s Word which clearly point out that the Heavenly Father has chosen to exalt and magnify the Name of His Son “above every name,” including even His Own Name.  Glory to God!

[2]    The Lord was raised from the dead by the Father…….The Heavenly Father also chose to resurrect His Son from the dead.  During His personal ministry the Lord Jesus Christ said, “Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.  No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself.  I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.  This commandment have I received of My Father,” John 10:17-18.  Here the Lord plainly stated that His Father had given Him the “legal authority” to lay down His life for His sheep [John 10:15], and also to take up His life again.  However, even though the Lord Himself made the choice to lay down His life, it was the Father who raised Him from the dead.  This truth is stated at least 25 times in the New Testament Scriptures.  Not one time is it ever stated that Christ raised Himself.  Our precious Lord laid down His life in obedience to His Father’s will, in complete

trust that the Father would raise Him up.  And the Father did!  See Psalm 16:8-11 and Acts 2:22-32.

[3]   The Lord was made Ruler over the Father’s entire Kingdom…….Our text also says, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…….And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father,” Philippians 2:10-11.  The Heavenly Father not only exalted the name of His Son above every other name, but the Father also exalted His Son to the position of rulership as Lord over the entire Kingdom of God.

Listen as the Lord Himself says, All power [exousia…authority; power; dominion; rule] is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.  Go ye therefore….,” Matthew 28:18-20.  Read also John 13:3 which explicitly states that “the Father had given all thingsinto the hands of His beloved Son.

Listen again as the Lord says, “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:  That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father.   He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father which hath sent Him,” John 5:22-23.  This passage of Scripture clearly states that the Father has turned all judgment over to His Son, requiring “all mento submit to and honor His Son, exactly as stated in Philippians 2:10-11.

Listen again as the Apostle Peter preached on Pentecost, explicitly saying, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God [the Father] hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ,” Acts 2:36.

Listen yet again as the Apostle Paul explicitly stated, “For He [God the Father] hath put all things under His feet, 1 Corinthians 15:27.

In Ephesians 1:19-23, writing by Divine Inspiration, the Apostle wrote, “And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His

11

mighty power,  Which He [the Father] wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places,  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:  And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church,  Which is His body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all.”

Again in Hebrews 1:1-3 the Scriptures state, “God [the Father], who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He [the Father] appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds;  Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the Word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

Finally, in 1 Peter 3:22 we read about the exhaltation of the Lord Jesus, “Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God [His Father]; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto Him.”

Is this enough Scriptural proof of the Lord’s position since His resurrection?  Glory to God!

Why shouldn’t it be this way?  Christ died to pay the sin debt of all men.  The Heavenly Father looked upon the sacrifice His Son was willing to endure in order to redeem fallen mankind, (that includes me and you) and the Father was “satisfied.”   I hope that every reader will let this truth soak into their very soul.  The Heavenly Father saw “the travail of His soul” and was “satisfied,” Isaiah 53:11.  Therefore, every sin which men have committed from the day Christ died on the cross to pay man’s sin debt right up to the present time, has not been a sin against God the Father, but rather has been a sin against the Lord Jesus Christ Himself who paid the supreme penalty for  man’s sin.  Therefore it is going to be the Lord Jesus Christ Himself which all Christ rejectors will have to face at the judgment, Revelation 20:11-15.   Think about it!

But some claim this would mean that the Heavenly Father is no longer in charge of His own Kingdom!  Well praise the Lord!  Perhaps a little glimmer of spiritual light is finally breaking through to some folks!  Listen to the truth prophesied in Daniel 7:13-14 some 2,600 years ago, “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, One like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought Him near before Him.  And there was given   Him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve

Him:  His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”  Now compare this prophecy with what is stated about its fulfillment as recorded in Luke 19:12 and Revelation 5:1-14.  Coincidence?  Not hardly!

Compare this also with the beautiful prophetic type portrayed by Joseph in Genesis 41.  In this account Joseph [a type of Christ] is exalted by the Pharaoh [a type of God the Father] to the position of “Lord” over all the land of Egypt [a type of the world].  The Scriptures explicitly state that Joseph was given such power [authority] from Pharaoh that “…that without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt,” Genesis 41:44.  The Pharaoh even placed his own “house” and “all my people” under Joseph’s rule, reserving only his own position “in the throne” to himself, 41:40.  Compare this with 1 Corinthians 15:24-28.  Folks, this is exactly what the Heavenly Father did for the Lord Jesus Christ.  The Father exalted the Lord Jesus Christ above every name in Heaven and in earth, and placed His own authority and power totally and completely in the hands of His Son; His humble and obedient Hebrew slave.   Folks, these and many other Scriptures that we could examine clearly point out that since the resurrection of the Lord…..

JESUS CHRIST IS LORD OVER ALL!

The Lord Jesus Christ, because He was “obedient unto death, even the death of the cross,” the Heavenly Father has now placed Him in charge of the whole Kingdom of God.  Hallelujah!  Glory to

12

God!  Praise the Lord!  Lift up your hearts and voices and give a mighty shout of praise to the Heavenly Father, and to the Lord Jesus Christ, and to the Holy Spirit!  Hallelujah!

[4]   The Lord was given “gifts” from the Father…….The Heavenly Father also “gave gifts” to His Son to bestow upon those repentant souls who would truly seek salvation [Matthew 7:13-14] and receive Christ as their Savior, Ephesians 4:7-8; Psalm 68:18-19; James 1:17.

There is much said in the ranks of Christianity today about spiritual “gifts” such as healing, prophesying, speaking in tongues, performing miracles, etc.  But does it ever occur to those who are so “gung ho” about spiritual gifts that the “grace of God” is a “gift” from the Heavenly Father?  Grace is what enables us to exercise “faith” in Christ.  Faith is also a “gift.”   Read it for yourself in Ephesians 4:7-8 and 2:8-10.  After the “gifts” of grace and faith the most important  spiritual “gift” that the Father gave to His Son was the “gift” of eternal life for as many as will truly believe on Christ as their personal Savior.  Read Romans 6:23 again for yourself.  What does it say about “eternal life” in that passage?  Well…??

Since the inspired Word of God explicitly states that “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord,” why are many today teaching “salvation by works” and trying to work their way to Heaven?   Well…??   If some reading this are engaged in such wickedness, they need to hang their head in shame and repent in bitter tears RIGHT NOW!  In view of the suffering and sacrifice that Christ Himself made for us, how dare anyone to lift up their filthy works [Ecclesiastes 7:20; Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:10-18; 3:23] before God’s throne of grace trying to convince Him of how good and deserving they are of Heaven.  Those who continue to teach and believe that they are saved by their works will spend eternity in Hell remembering that the way of salvation was purchased by the precious blood of Christ, and that they refused to receive as a “free gift” [Romans 5:15-18] the salvation which His suffering and death made possible.  If one misses the “gift” of eternal life then none of the other gifts even matter.  The Lord Himself clearly stated, “For as the Father hath life in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself,” John 5:26.

I beseech [yes, I beg and plead with] every reader to again read John 3:26, 3:36, 5:24, 14:6, 17:1-3, Acts 4:12, 16:30-31, Romans 10:8-13, 10:17, 2 Corinthians 13:5, and 2 Peter 1:10.  I want to meet every reader in Heaven when our Lord comes, and He is coming SOON.  Please don’t disappoint me!  Our beloved Hebrew Slave died for you and for me!  Won’t you receive Him as your own personal Savior and live for Him daily?

Conclusion

In this study I have repeatedly demonstrated with book, chapter, and verse the correlation between the Law of the Hebrew Slave and the person and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.  The Scriptural correlation has been proven by book, chapter, and verse in every point I have presented in this study.  Christ chose of His own free will to become the Heavenly Father’s beloved Hebrew slave in order to carry out His Father’s will in paying the redemption price for fallen mankind, in order that redeemed men might again be reconciled to God and God’s Kingdom could come upon the earth, Matthew 6:10.  Oh how very much those who are truly saved should love the Lord for what He sacrificed for your soul and mine.  And very much we should love our Heavenly Father who set forth this whole plan of redemption, working it out with His Son in the council halls of eternity even before the world was.  Praise the Lord!  Thank you Father!  Thank you Lord Jesus!

Isn’t it also obvious that we living today have now reached and surpassed the end of 6,000 years of human history?  This 6,000 years does correlate with the six years that the Hebrew slave was to serve his master.  Folks, this fact alone should tell any true Bible believer that great changes in both heaven and earth are RIGHT NOW staring mankind in the face.

The Heavenly Father’s beloved Hebrew slave and the true believer’s precious Savior is preparing to return return and take His New Covenant Gentile “bride” to Himself just as He promised in John 14:1-3, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and Revelation 3:10.  At any minute now our Lord will come for

13

His “bride.”  Will YOU be ready?

What are the consequences of not being ready?  Folks, in spite of all who have railed against and denounced the Bible, every prophecy made in it which has already come to pass was literally fulfilled exactly as predicted.  That is accuracy!  Think about it!  After Christ comes for His “Gentile bride,” it is clearly predicted that all of humanity left on the earth, and the earth itself [Matthew 13:41], will be purged of all those whose hearts are incorrigibly set on evil in a 7 year “time of trouble” unlike anything ever previously seen or known by mankind in all of human history, Matthew 24:21; Mark 13:19.  Since all the other prophecies which have already come to pass have been literally fulfilled exactly as given, then what makes some think that these prophecies won’t also be fulfilled exactly as given?  This terrible “time of trouble” will bring the consequences of not being ready upon all Christ rejecters, and even upon those who simply “neglect so great salvation,” Hebrews 2:3.  Your “good intentions” to get things “right with the Lord” someday, won’t be worth a flip after the Lord has come and removed His “Gentile bride.”  Read 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 and think about it!  NOW!

Folks, we are at the end of the 6,000 years and the predicted “time of trouble” is staring humanity in the face RIGHT NOW!  Do you know and have assurance that Christ is your own personal Savior?  That you have been saved by His grace?   If any reader has never been saved, or if any reader has doubts about their salvation, and feels the need of spiritual counsel, please feel free to contact me.  By the grace of God I KNOW the Lord as my Savior, and I will count it a blessing to help YOU come to know Him too.  Seek Him today!  Tomorrow may be too late!  May God bless His Word to the heart of every reader is my prayer.
