Actually, that's backwards. They've done specials on the 'Science of Star Trek'. The writers admit that they were just writing...no science behind it. Just imagination. The interesting part is that the fiction that little boys (and girls) grew up with on shows such as Star Trek lead the science minded to invent those items. The flip phone was designed as a direct reflection of the communicator on the original Star Trek.
