Lee Iacocca's lament may be going viral:He bemoans the lack of principled and visionary leadership in America and makes a case that this is what's wrong.I disagree.Principled and visionary leadership has been manifest in many areas, not the least of which is right here on the Five Doves. The problem, I submit, is not with leadership, but with "follow-ship."The ONLY cure for our global woes is repentance toward God and faith toward Christ. That's it. A true leader who really wants to see us all extricated from this mess will point toward and lead toward repentance and faith. That's been the clarion call of many of us for YEARS.But the followers won't follow. The problem, they insist, is "fanatics" or "liberals" or "big business" or "the previous administration" or _______ - well, you get the picture. Regardless of how articulate anyone is in defining the problem, it is no guarantee that the solution they propose is the correct one.Read about some of the great leaders in Israel: Hezekiah, Josiah, Nehemiah and a few others. In cultures every bit as secularized and religionized as ours, they proposed spiritual renewal as the only way to cultural and national survival. Which of our so-called "leaders" -- the political luminaries anointed by the main stream media -- are wearing sackcloth? Who dares to shut down the taverns, strip joints and NFL and proclaim anything as austere as the repentance of Nineveh? We would if we could. Our "leaders" won't. And the followers in this once-great nation still think "it's the economy, stupid."So, to answer Lee's question, our "leaders" are going over the cliff and into oblivion. The true leaders are being ignored by those who should be following them. Truly, judgment has come.See you on the mezzanine.Steve
