Hopes of finding a parallel universe through the activity of the hadron collider
at CERN? Opening a door to find out what is there?
Yes, spooky! Absolutely foolish! The scientists assume, wrongly, that they
are bound to find something interesting, benign, something we can handle,
behind that door.
But surely some of them must think, this could be a problem, and yet they
go ahead. Some actually trust in their religious faith to protect them while
doing this. I know a scientist who goes periodically to CERN and who is
a very devout Christian, along with his whole family. He thinks it's fine!
There were scientists who knew that we were in danger when we developed
the atom bomb. Witness Robert Oppenheimer's famous words as he watched
the first atomic explosion in the New Mexico desert: "I am Shiva, Destroyer
of Worlds". He knew there was danger. People have written books about
what he was thinking, why he thought it was better to go ahead even if there
was danger. And in that era, there WAS belief that developing the
Bomb was necessary to save servicemen's lives in the Pacific Theater of war.
And both Hitler and Hirohito were hot on the trail of the A-bomb at the same
time as Oppie was philosophizing in the desert.
I see it as a tragedy, mankind's tragedy, that he is often forced, or seems to
be forced, to take a step which will develop into something harmful, as the
atomic bomb developed into our present atomic proliferation among the
But in the case of CERN, where is there ANY justification on moral principle
to be carrying research to this degree?
I personally do not have that much faith in science.
