"To; Marilyn Agee (2 Oct 2010) Church Fathers and the year of Jesus birth"

Hello Marilyn, seems like we did this before! Anyway, let me start by saying I do appreciate your in depth studies, and your web site with so many interesting insights. I’m not trying to be an old stick in the mud, but I think it’s important to retain the history entrusted to us by these dedicated Christians of the early church.

To clarify the point about the fast of Esther, I didn’t mean to suggest the Jews at the time of Herod didn’t observe Purim, what I meant was there was no national day of fasting on the eve of Purim at that time. Additionally the appointed times referred to in Est 9:31,32 reflect the Sabbatical year Esther became Queen 478 BC which Mordecai noted to be “such a time as this,” and the first year Purim was observed in the Sabbatical year 471 BC.

To show the birth year of Jesus I have modified your timeline to reflect what has been passed down to us from the Church Fathers and historians closest to the event.

Tishri 1, 3759,  2 BC, Herod King (36) (17 TC) Jesus is Born, Sabbatic Year.

This is the birth year passed down to us from the early Church Fathers and the historians closest to that period.

Tertullian, (born about 160 A.D.) stated that Augustus began to rule 41 years before the birth of Jesus and died 15 years after that event. Augustus' died on August 19, 14 A.D., placing Jesus' birth at 2. B.C. Tertullian also notes that Jesus was born 28 years after the death of Cleopatra in 30 B.C., which is 2 B.C.

Iraneus, born about a century after Jesus, also notes that the Lord was born in the 41st year of the reign of Augustus. Since Augustus began his reign in the autumn of 43 B.C., this also substantiates Jesus birth in 2 B.C.

Eusebius (264-340 A.D.), the "Father of Church History," ascribes it to the 42nd year of the reign of Augustus and the 28th from the subjection of Egypt on the death of Anthony and Cleopatra. The 42nd year of Augustus ran from the autumn of 2 B.C. to the autumn of 1 B.C. The subjugation of Egypt into the Roman Empire occurred in the autumn of 30 B.C. The 28th year extended from the autumn of 3 B.C. to the autumn of 2 B.C. the only date that would meet both of these constraints is the autumn of 2 B.C.

THE START OF JESUS MINISTRY

Tishri 1, 3788, 28 AD, Jubilee Year, (46 TC), Jesus 29, the 15th yr of Tiberius.

--- John announces the coming of Messiah on the Day of Atonement, and baptizes for the repentance of sin, drawing large crowds from Jerusalem to the region of the Jordan River

--- Jesus is baptized by John, who proclaims Jesus the Lamb of God.

--- Jesus reads Isaiah 61:1,2 on Nisan 1, announcing the Jubilee, the acceptable year of the Lord, is come and this day is fulfilled in your hearing, Jesus starts his ministry in the Fullness of Time, in the Year of Jubilee.

The earliest year of Jesus' first Passover was the first one that followed His baptism. His baptism is presumed to have followed shortly after John the Baptist began his ministry during the fifteenth year of Tiberius, "when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea." (Luke 3:1) The earliest date of the fifteenth year of Tiberius according to Luke began October 20, 27, and Pontius Pilate arrived in Judea about that time. Therefore, the earliest possible first Passover was the one following the arrival of Pilate, or in 28 CE.

Tishri 1, 3789, 29 AD, Jesus 30

Tishri 1, 3790, 30 AD, Jesus 31

Tishri 1, 3791, 31 AD, Jesus 32

Tishri 1, 3792, 32 AD, Jesus 33

Nisan 14, 3793, 33 AD, April 1 (Gregorian), Friday, Jesus ~33.5 years old is crucified.

Origen -"Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in accordance with the prophecies made about Him. went to His Passion in the 19th year of Tiberius; for this time we find indeed in different Greek records the following related word for word: the sun was extinguished, in Bythinia an earthquake happened, which overturned the greater part of Nicaea, -- that agrees with what happened at the Passion of our Lord. Thus Phlegon, who wrote the Olympiads, report the following word for word in his thirteenth book: 'In the fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was an eclipse of the sun which was greater than any known before and in the sixth hour of the day it became night, so that stars appeared in the heaven; and a great earthquake that broke out in Bithynia destroyed the greatest part of Nicaea.' "

(Fotheringham; Newton, 1970, p. 110-113.Stephenson, p.359-360)

The 19th reginal year of Tiberius was 33 AD, by Roman reckoning; and the spring of 33 AD fell in the latter half of the 4th year of the 202nd Olympiad, by Greek reckoning.

In conclusion, we do have a reliable witness to the events of our Lord’s first appearing and the years of his laboring for our salvation. Remarkably, if we shift the year of Jesus birth from 5 BC to 2 BC that also shifts the year of the cross from 30 AD to 33 AD, so the timelines are basically the same with different starting points. … ybic … Oliver
