My own experience: I celebrated Halloween when growing up [didn't
know anything about it, saw it as harmless, although even back then pins were
being put in candy; houses were getting egged, etc.]
Then as an adult: we made sure the porch light was off & did not
participate in it at all over the past 20 some years. Then, once we moved
to an area where there are TONS of kids & the guy we bought the house from
told us how he went "all out" on Halloween ~ making a big deal out of it
& told of all the hundreds of bags of candy he'd give
out...... well, for that reason (with kids already accustomed to coming here to
"get the good stuff" as they put it) ~ anyway, so with that, we changed our tune
& gave out candy (AND TRACTS!!) over the last few years.
Honestly, the ONLY reason we've done this was b/c I was afraid, what with
kids USED TO coming by here on Halloween, that we'd get the house egged or tp'd
or the vehicle tires flattened or something. But then, ..... *GULP* ~ when
reading this article & realizing that was part of the entire reason for
Halloween, I expect I can find a better way to be "protected" [from
above!!]
Article snippet: To exorcise these ghosts, that is, to free yourself from
their supposed evil sway, you would have to set out food – give the demons a
treat – and provied shelter for them during the night. If they were satisfied with your treat,
it was believed they would leave you in peace. If food and shelter were not provided,
or if they were not satisfied, these spirits, it was believed, would “trick” you
by casting an evil spell on you and cause
havoc.
I've got all the stuff ready to go again this year, however, after having
just read this article & the Scriptures provided, well let's just say I'm
now "convicted" that it's not right to participate -- even if I was viewing it
as an "outreach" (if you will) as an opportunity to "witness through the
tracts".
Sooo.... sigh! Not sure what we're gonna' do with a bunch
of Halloween candy, but I simply do not want to participate any more.
For protection: I will pray Psalm 91 & ask for a "hedge of
protection" to surround our home!!
