Black Monday

The title given to one of the most notorious days in recent financial history. On October 19, 1987 the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) lost almost 22% in a single day. That event marked the beginning of a global stock market decline. By the end of the month, most of the major exchanges had dropped over 20%.

 

Dow Closes Above 12,000 for 1st Time; Oil Rises and Bonds Fall

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 12,000 for the first time after Coca-Cola Co.'s profit beat analysts' estimates and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. predicted faster earnings growth for telephone companies.

Oil prices rose, while bonds fell on signs of manufacturing strength in the Philadelphia area.
