Amish residents of rural Lancaster County, Pa., have started a charity fund to help not only the victims' families – but also the mass-murderer's widow and children, reports the New York Times today. The killer, Charles Carl Roberts IV, 32, committed suicide at the end of Monday's attack, in which he shot 10 girls. Five of them, aged 7 to 13, died.

Report: Oil Discovered In Dead Sea Area

Oil has been discovered in the Dead Sea area, Dr. Eli Tenenbaum, an official from Genco, the national company responsible for drilling in the region, reported on Wednesday. Tenenbaum stated that the amount of oil could reach commercial levels. "We noticed that the pressure in the area was very high and when we opened the tap, oil started flowing freely for several minutes," Tenenbaum told Channel 10.

Most people who quit smoking worry about gaining weight. It seems to go with the territory. While a small gain is normal, excessive weight gain when you quit smoking can create new health problems and erode your determination to stay off cigarettes. [NOTE FROM PEGGY: I'm experiencing this right now. I just made 3 months smoke-free, and have already put on weight, even though I've been trying to very closely watch what I eat, and I exercise every night for about 20 minutes, and yesterday, began walking with 2 of my GFs during breaks and at lunch.  Please pray YHWH will bless my efforts to please Him, and to take off the extra weight I put on from quitting cigarettes. Pope Benedict XVI has become the center of a media firestorm over a statement that strikes me as common as saying the sun will rise tomorrow. During a speech in Germany at a university where he used to teach, he quoted Manuel II Palaeologus, a 14th-century Byzantine Christian emperor, who said: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

I'm not sure what event sparked Manuel II Palaeologus to make his comment. I have to wonder what his majesty would say today about the more recent accomplishment of the followers of Muhammad.
