I had no problem switching over from BC and AD to BCE and CE once I realized two things:
- When the B.C. / A.D. system was being calculated, they actually made a mistake in pinpointing the year of Jesus' birth. Scholars later discovered that Jesus was actually born several years earlier, not 0 AD. So when you say 2000 A.D. or "2000 years after Our Lord's coming" you really are stating a known fallacy.
- BCE and CE refers to the "common era" of the commonly accepted Gregorian calendar that even non-christians use.
Thus, it's not sinister to use BCE and CE. It's really more accurate and also more polite to those who are not yet sure or in agreement that Jesus is "our lord" as "A.D." literally says.
