EU Deadlocks Over Turkey's Admission Efforts

A European Union deadlock over the terms for opening historic entry talks with Turkey deepened as time ran short for the start of negotiations on Monday, sending Turkish financial markets plunging. EU president Britain said it was no longer certain the negotiations would start at all on Monday after Austria stuck to its demand that the cast, poor, Muslim country be offered an alternative to full membership and Turkey raised a new problem.
