"Life Choices"

We had the most awesome assembly yesterday.  It was called Life Choices Sponsored by TEA (Shocking I know) and it centered around Rachel Scott, the first student shot at Columbine.  Her aunt and uncle were here, and they shared there personal testimonies, and that of Rachel.  Rachel had accepted Christ a couple of years before the shooting, and was targeted for this.  Her last moments were being asked by Dillon Clebold “Where is you God now, do you still believe in him”.  She replied “ yes I do” and that would be her last words.  The goal though was to talk about the legacy Rachel left behind.  She was friend to the friendless, and the down trodden.  She was a popular girl who always had a kind word for the kids no one else would talk to.

The goal was to get the kids to realize they are worth something and that they can influence those around them, and that regardless of there family background, they had a responsibility to there kids and grandkids to make choices today that will have a positive influence on them.

They invited the kids to come down and pray at a cross that was a memorial to Rachel and dedicate themselves to changing their lives.  They were asked to leave a token on or at the cross as a sing of the commitment.  The cross was covered with Brazos High School items by the end of the time we had.

The story that got me was about a young girl who was ready to give it up and was planning kill herself during lunch. On her way out of the building, a popular football player, and a close friend of Rachel, opened the door for her and told her “hello, how are you”.  She was so overwhelmed by this football player noticing her that she went home and wrote a note that said “ you saved my life” and gave it too him with the bullet she was going to use.

You never know when a kind word will do that.

Rachel left behind a journal of her thoughts to God.  Exactly one year before she was killed she wrote that she knew she would not be here for long and that she had accomplished what God had wanted her too.  She wrote a poem that described her death a few weeks before she died.  And the week of her death there are roses with drops of blood coming out doodled all over her journal  The hour before she died, She drew the rose, but this time she added two eyes with 13 tear drops falling on the rose. A friend recalled her drawing and said that she was at total and complete peace.  There were 13 people killed in the shootings.

It was a very moving time. Many students prayed with the two people who put on the program, and many prayed in groups on their own.  We have been planting seeds here for a while, I believe that was the watering, I pray we see a harvest here.
