Growing fears of Sharon assassination
Opposition leader Shimon Peres says he's concerned that Jewish extremists could try to assassinate Prime Minister Ariel Sharon because of his plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and dismantle 21 settlements there. "I am very fearful of the incitement, of the grave things that are again being heard. I am afraid someone will try to assassinate the Prime Minister," Peres told the Israeli newspaper "Ma'ariv." Peres said the divisive political climate reminds him of 1995, when then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated because he relinquished territory to the Palestinians. "There is a lot of similarity between the situation then and now," Peres said.Generals worried about mutiny
Israeli generals are worried that a significant number of religious soldiers will refuse to dismantle Jewish settlements in Gaza. This, after 60 rabbis endorsed an edict saying that removing Jews from their homes in the Biblical Land of Israel is a violation of Jewish Law. Complicating matters further, many religious Jews are officers and play an important role in the army's best units. The government has called on the rabbis to leave the army out of the political debate. The army plans to build a mock settlement to teach soldiers how to evacuate settlers who resist.
