Shop 'n' Scan -- Albertsons--Oct. 3, 2004The next generation of self-checkout is now being unveiled in a handful of Albertsons stores.
Dubbed the Shop 'n' Scan, it's a handheld price scanner that allows customers to scan and bag their groceries as they shop.
Shoppers pick up the scanner and empty grocery bags at a special display just inside the store's entrance.
After scanning and bagging groceries as they go through the store,
the total from the scanner is downloaded at a self-checkout station.
With the swipe of a debit or credit card, the shopping trip is finished.'You scan your card and you're done'
Albertsons has introduced its Shop 'n' Scan in all its Dallas/Fort Worth stores, nine stores in Chicago, and in Boise at its Columbia Village store, 6568 Federal Way.Flickinger estimates that 20 to 25 percent of the grocery transactions industrywide are now being done through self-checkout lanes.
But even shoppers like Velma Vance, who isn't currently using the new technology, seem resigned to the notion that
one day they won't have a choice.http://www.idahostatesman.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041003/NEWS0202/410030340/1029/NEWS03
