"SUPERMAN IS DEAD!"

Dear friends:

"SUPERMAN IS DEAD" according to news reports this morning.  Christopher Reeve died suddenly, yesterday.  A TV report said that he died of a heart attack while being treated in the hospital.

This has great prophetic symbolism.  Superman was the epitome of human strength and self-reliance, you might say of godless secular humanism.  Perhaps Reeve's passing is another sign of the near end of man's prideful attempts at being his own god.

I never remember hearing mention of the Creator in all the Superman episodes.  I never remember hearing Christopher Reeve mention God after his great physical tragedy that left him paralyzed and totally helpless.  From his horizontal position and with his laboring, raspy voice, Reeve always expressed prideful determination to walk again, but by his own power, not God's intervention.  From his public statements, I got the impression that God was irrelevant in the matter, if He even existed.  But Reeve's human effort failed him.  In the end, it was human weakness, not kryptonite, that did him in.  He is now facing his Creator.

A previous SUPERMAN from the 1950s, George Reeves (similar last name), died in 1959, reportedly of suicide.

How ironic.  One Superman dies from a short fall off a horse, and the another kills himself.  So much for man's phony Superman.

As a little kid, I was a big Superman fan, even a member of the Superman Club.  I well remember the club motto: strength, health, and courage.  It inspired me.  One day when in grammar school, I made a cloak out of a big towel, then went jumping off high places, trying to fly.  But alas, I could not fly.  I was not Superman, except in my childish mind.

I really wanted there to be a Superman.  He could beat up Captain Marvel, Batman, Captain America, the Green Lantern, and all the rest of them put together.  The world needs a Superman,  a Man of Steel to fight for righteousness.

But later, to my delight and joy, I discovered that there is, indeed, a real Superman!  His name is not Clark Kent.  His name is Jesus!  He is the God-man, super-Man, Son of Man, Jesus Christ.  And not only can He leap tall buildings, and run faster than a speeding bullet, He has all power in heaven and earth!  All things are possible with Him.  He can leap between galaxies.  He can run faster than light.  He upholds the entire universe by His Word of power! Wow!  Greater than I ever imagined!

I also learned that ultimately He will bring real truth, justice and righteousness to the world, and is working on it now.

Amazingly, I also learned that he delegates His power to His followers!  He said, "You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you" (Acts 1:8).  And He said the things that He did, we can do also (John 14:12), and that He lives inside of His followers!  He also forgives my sin, and gives me eternal life. This is the best news I have ever heard!

So, the real Superman is presently on the earth, still fighting injustice, and doing miracles -- through His people.  What a revelation!

Yes, I still believe in Superman -- but the real one, not a fictitious one.  And this all-powerful One lives in me!  His power indwells me. His power is manifested through me, and all who believe.  His power is the promise of the Father, the promise "is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call" (Acts 2:39). (Of course, our "kryptonite" is sin, which can take away our strength and destroy our effectiveness for the Lord, so we must avoid it at all costs, even as the fictional Superman avoided his kryptonite.)

Our real Superman, Jesus, the man from Nazareth, is worthy of all praise and honor!

Jim
