Vaudiville certainly fits the bill, light entertainment meant to make you laugh. The new babes starving for something more substantual. Many years ago I saw something similar. There was a minister on top of a dome putting on quite a show for the world, kind of like a clown on a high wire act. Then the hammer hit and darkness fell, judgement. Most people did not know what hit them. They did not realize that what many had passed for church was just really light entertainment. Kind of like pale beer and amber beer. Pale is light and is easy to drink, amber dark and full flavored, however it is bitter and hard to swallow. Probably not the best example.
