One could liken the "watch in the night" to standing watch in the military.  It is oh so difficult to stay awake while every one around you is sleeping. Your only duty is to stay viligent, you are not allowed distractions.  Very appropriate for us.

It is my understanding that in the Roman times if you were caught sleeping during your watch, your clothes would be torched, and  everyone would know the shame of your not staying awake. (you would be without clothing).

Thank you John for providing  a place of encouragement.  Where we can look to one another and say, it is almost dawn, the watch is almost over, just a little longer, stay strong, resist the temptation to sleep.
