Police sources: Gay pride deployment 'overreaction' aimed at nixing march By Jonathan Lis and Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondents Sources within police headquarters have called the decision to boost the number of troops at the upcoming gay pride parade in Jerusalem "an overreaction," which is ultimately intended to have the parade cancelled completely.
Police decided Tuesday to expand the number of forces at the parade to 8,000, including 2,000 Border Policemen, after receiving intelligence information regarding plans by ultra-Orthodox and extreme rightists to hold violent protests and attack parade participants.

Border Police to Deploy 2,000 Troops At Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade
Thousands of Police to Secure Jerusalem 'Gay Pride' ParadeJerusalem City Councilwoman Mina Fenton is spearheading the campaign against the march and says it was a mistake not to speak strongly against it from the beginning.
The first few years there were virtually no protests against the march because local residents thought "common sense" would win out and the event would be cancelled. The religious Jewish community also did not want to get involved in protests that might cause their children to ask questions that they didn't want to answer, Fenton said in a telephone interview.
But Fenton accused the LGBT community of engaging in violence by offending the sensibilities of the religious communities. She described one woman who walked down the street bare-breasted, with a Jewish prayer shawl wrapped around her bottom.
"Tension is very high," Fenton said. "We are praying that God will help us and there won't be a confrontation."

Police Want Soldiers in Yesha To Help Guard Gay Parade
IsraelNN.com) Police have declared an emergency alert for next week's planned parade of homosexuals in Jerusalem and have asked the IDF to back up the police force with 2,000 Border Patrol troops who are, currently, protecting Jews in Judea and Samaria. The IDF has not yet replied to the request.
The emergency alert usually is declared only when there are warnings of immediate terrorist attacks. Police and intelligence authorities have said that massive opposition to next Friday's parade may cause violence. Police last summer canceled a permit for the parade because of fears to public safely but have not indicated they will do so again.
Activists plan a demonstration on Monday, highlighting animals to depict what they term bestial behavior of homosexuals. Another group has called for a prayer rally in an attempt to prevent "the desecration of Jerusalem." Last summer, Arab clerics joined rabbis to appeal for a cancellation of the parade.Nat'l alert at highest ahead of parade
