The Connection Between President Bush's Political Problems and Israel

Again, as I have shared many times before, President George W. Bush's political problems began when he agreed to become involved with the Israel-Palestinian peace process in April 2001, and when he endorsed the Mitchell Plan on May 24, 2001 (which was the new "land for peace" plan prior to the Bush /Quartet plans).

His problems worsened dramatically when he and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah — with the help of Secretary of State Colin Powell, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer and Prince Bandar, the Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. — worked in late August and early September of 2001 on what was going to be the most comprehensive peace plan ever to be delivered to the U.N. General Assembly. The vehicle was a speech to be given on September 24 by President Bush or Secretary of State Colin Powell, but the 9-11 terror events stopped it and precipitated the costly war on terror.

In the U.N. speech, either Bush or Powell was going to call for Israel to fulfill U.N. Resolutions 242 and 338, discuss the future borders of the city of Jerusalem, and publicly endorse a Palestinian state — a place neither Bush's father, the first President Bush, nor President Bill Clinton ever dared go.

The Bush plan was finally presented on June 24, 2002, in the White House Rose Garden.

In the summer of 2002, the Bush plan was adopted by the Quartet (representing the U.S., the U.N., the EU and Russia), and the Quartet's "land for peace" plan was officially presented and confirmed in the Oval Office on December 20, 2002.

Putting all of this in political perspective, President Bush was coming off a very successful November 2002 election; and according to Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard and Howard Fineman of Newsweek, Bush was on a political roll. He had almost everything working for him, his political party had control of both the House and the Senate, he had a very strong Cabinet and a majority of the American public supported him.

The war in Iraq began on March 20, 2003, and President Bush declared and end to major combat operations on May 1, 2003. On April 30, 2003, the Quartet Road Map was delivered to the Israelis and the Palestinians, and the Israelis were told how they were to divide their land.

President Bush, the man who gave his word that Israel and Palestine would come to live "side-by-side in peace and security," saw the times become politically challenging. He experienced once again the political consequences of the situation in Iraq (and costly corruption within his political party) in the November 2006 election.

The war on terror led the U.S. into Afghanistan and Iraq. It has cost the United States almost 3,000 soldiers' lives and hundreds of billions of dollars — with the costs continuing to climb, and no workable solution.

There are many corrupt people in the new Iraqi police force and the Iraqi military, which is very problematic. Additionally, the sectarian violence looks like it will continue to spiral into a civil war. With all this in focus, many world leaders believe that if they can work out the Israeli-Palestinian problem, things will improve in the Middle East — but nothing could be further from the truth.

In reality, Iran, Syria, Al Qaeda and the terror groups of the Middle East want the U.S. out of the Middle East and want to eliminate the nation of Israel. They aren't after peace; they are after domination.

Consequences

In my book, Eye to Eye — Facing the Consequences of Dividing Israel, I document the political and personal consequences to every U.S. president, Middle East leader, Israeli prime minister and world leader who has attempted to divide or take the land of Israel.

History has also shown us that when President Bush is involved in the dividing of the land of Israel, things worsen for him politically and his problems with Iraq, Iran and North Korea worsen substantially.

As detailed in Eye to Eye, when anyone attempts to divide God's covenant land and interfere with His plan for Israel and the Jewish people, there are painful consequences.
