"Question on timing"

I don't know if anyone has posted anything like this, but I was wondering
about something.  I know there is a lot of speculation about the timing of
the Rapture and the beginning of the great tribulation.  And I have seen a
lot of timing calculations that seemed to be really logical that haven't
panned  out.
Could it be that God's timing of end-time events is based more on a set
"time" rather than a set "day".  I guess what I mean is "could the timing be
variable in the way that we humans logically view time".  I know our concept
of time is not the same as his.   Would  free-will and choice be the key to
the timing?   Will God actually begin the events foretold at the time he
determines that the nations of the earth have chosen to turn from him and
are unwilling to repent.  I believe America has been an extension of God's
promises to Abraham to rise a great nation.  America is unique in that it
was originally founded on the hope of spreading the message of Christianity
to the World and America has, indeed done that.  America has sent
missionaries to virtually all parts of the world.  It seems like America
began to turn away from its Christian roots in the 60's decade.
If John Kerry is elected, wouldn't that definitely send the message that
America has made a clear choice to turn its back on God and his laws?
We know that if he is elected, Abortion will only become more protected than
ever, Gay marriage will more than likely become legal nationwide.  More
Judges will be appointed who are hostile to Christianity.  Yet there is
expected to be record turnout this election and Americans may very well
elect Kerry in spite of being fully-aware of all of these facts.
I guess what I am really trying to ask is, Could God be basing the time when
the Great tribulation begins on what America as a nation actually decides to
do in our relationship with him??   Although he has perfect knowledge and
ultimately knows what decisions this nation will make, does he not by his
very nature, wait on free will to run its course before taking action making
the timing somewhat variable?  For example, if we had revival in America,
would he possibly withhold judgment for a time?  Or hasten it if  people
continue to harden their hearts.  Wouldn't there be a point that God himself
makes the decision that he cannot delay any longer and must act?  And
wouldn't that be a time only known to God himself ?  And wouldn't Satan and
his angels be speculating on that time just as the rest of us are?   And one
more thing, If God judges America in the same way that he did the Israelites
when they turned away, would that explain why America is not specifically
mentioned in end-time prophesy?  Will he use America's enemies to judge the
nation in a similar way as Judah ?
Has anyone seen anything on any possible parallels between America and the
Book of Jeremiah?
I would appreciate any wisdom anyone has on these questions.
Thanks.
