The annular eclipse started in southern China at 22:06 UTC on May 20, then swept over southern Japan, the Pacific Ocean, Alaska's Aleutian Islands, before finishing over Oregon and California around 01:30 UTC on May 21. The eclipse reached its maximum duration of 5 minutes 46 seconds over the Pacific Ocean, according to NASA.

Myanmar explains power cuts to calm rare protests

YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar's government made an uncharacteristic plea for understanding Tuesday after chronic power cuts set off protests in the Southeast Asian country that is easing toward democracy after decades of military rule. Several members of Aung San Suu Kyi's (NLD) opposition party have been detained by Myanmar authorities following the protests against the crippling power cuts.
May 22, 2012- YANGON - As long-isolated Myanmar opens up, its people are flexing their newly democratic muscles and testing the boundaries of freedom in a series of protests over chronic power outages.
The protests pose a difficult test for reformist President Thein Sein, who's government has approved a bill authorizing peaceful protests in the former British colony also known as Burma. Myanmar suffers crippling power cuts, with six-hour blackouts common place in Yangon and outages three times as long in Mandalay, where around 1,500 people on Monday protested as news of the rallies spread on the social network, Facebook. Only 13 percent of Myanmar's population has access to electricity, according to 2009 figures from the World Bank.
