·       Official: Israel to accept ceasefire within days

Israel is expected to agree to an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire with Hamas within days, a senior Egyptian official told the London-based newspaper Asharq al-Awsat in a report published on Monday.

According to the official, Israel will give an "unofficial" acceptance to the agreement only after "the Palestinian factions announce that they accept the deal."

"After we announce the cease-fire in Cairo, the sides will be bound to it," the official told the paper. "In addition, Israel will open the border crossings to Gaza in order to allow the transfer of commercial shipments, medicine, fuel and food."  Full story http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1209627012903&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

In order to preserve stunning gains, Israel must relinquish occupied land

As Israelis finalize preparations for their momentous 60th anniversary - a date marking 10 years of consistent economic growth and industrious expansion - there remains the underlying question that will go unanswered yet another decade: What will be done with the West Bank and Golan Heights? Despite all of its considerable achievements, cross-border violence persists and Israel's existence remains fundamentally insecure. At the heart of this conundrum is the occupation of Palestinian and Syrian lands, a wound that if left unattended will produce a tragedy of scale we have not yet witnessed.

Lebanon pullout, Gaza disengagement make it clear that withdrawals don't pay off

Someone over at the Prime Minister's Office thinks that if he disseminates Ehud Olmert's willingness to bid the Golan Heights farewell, the media will protect him and guarantee that he completes a full term in office; Israel's citizens will forgive him for his foolish acts during the last war in Lebanon and forget the endless police investigations he faces, while treating him as they did Ariel Sharon - full impunity in exchange for full withdrawal.  Full story   http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3538451,00.html

Now what was Olmert’s omission or commission to warrant this ‘pulling out the skeletons from the cupboard’?  what has he done to upset the ptb?  They go ‘way to dusty death’ as Shakespeare wrote in Macbeth! The list goes on.... Arafat, Rabin, Sharon and what about the others? Not to mention a few   Rajiv Gandhi, Ali and Benazir Bhutto and  so on and so forth.  Politics is a dangerous game, you do walk on razor edge all the time.  Not only that it is a dirty game too!!!

·       Olmert Aide Under House Arrest

 by Gil Ronen

(IsraelNN.com) Shula Zaken, one of the suspects in the case being investigated against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, was sent to house arrest until Friday by a court, several news websites reported Sunday. Zaken, who was Olmert's bureau chief and confidante from the time he was Mayor of Jerusalem until last year, has been under house arrest since last Tuesday, according to these reports.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, State Attorney Moshe Lador, and Maj.-Gen. Yochanan Danino, who heads the Police Investigations and Intelligence Department, published a statement Sunday evening saying the gag order imposed on the investigation must remain in place - for now.  They promised that they would "continue to closely follow developments with the aim of making it possible to give the public additional information, as long as this can be done without impeding the investigation."   Full story http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/126065

·       A day to celebrate, reflect on Israel’s 60th birthday

Last updated: May 5th, 2008 06:22 AM (PDT)

The congregation of Tacoma’s Temple Beth El, visiting dignitaries and community members couldn’t have asked for better weather Sunday for the celebration of Israel’s 60th birthday.

Kids gamboled across the lawn, hips swayed to Asaf Erez and the Od Yishama Orchestra, and visitors browsed among the particolored tents. Not surprisingly, the longest line was for the falafel stand.

“We’re recognizing Israel has reached 60 years old when it still faces a lot of challenges,” said Rabbi Bruce Kadden. “I’m delighted with the turnout from the general community.”

For the tots with snow cone-stained lips, six decades is an incomprehensible span. For others in the crowd, it required a mere glance over the shoulder at childhood.

Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg, who spoke at the event along with Gov. Chris Gregoire and Reps. Adam Smith and Dave Reichert, said he had been born in 1949, just one year after the nation’s founding.

A couple of generations have now grown up in a world that recognizes Israel as a state and a homeland for the Jewish people, he said.

“Let all coming generations know of an Israel on this Earth,” Ladenburg said. “We should do everything we can to protect that.”

Smith, a Tacoma Democrat, echoed those sentiments.

“It’s amazing what the nation of Israel has accomplished in such a short time,” he said.

Reichert, an Auburn Republican, stressed his support for Israel as an ally in the Middle East.

“Israel needs to know for certain that it has friends around the world and in Washington state,” he said. “What affects Israel affects America. Israel’s enemies are our enemies.”

The governor emphasized Israel as an economic partner with the state, whose advances in agriculture and water conservation technology have benefited Eastern Washington.

“My goal is to make it an even greater trading partner – both ways,” Gregoire said.

The event was more than laudatory and reflective, it was also educational.

Booths were set up with information on Israel’s history and the Holocaust. Attendees could make sandals, help weave a rainbow-colored Torah cover and splash their hands in a salty kiddie pool doubling as the Dead Sea. One could write a prayer on a piece of paper and slide it into a paper-bag recreation of Jerusalem’s Western Wall.

Judith Kay, 56, of Tacoma, said her prayer was for peace and some personal things.

“In the big historical perspective, it’s amazing to be alive when Israel exists,” she said. “I hope Tibet doesn’t have to wait so long.”

The celebration marks Israel’s modern birthday, but Jewish history dates back thousands of years.

“It’s a little odd to celebrate Israel’s 60th birthday when Israel’s birth predates modern history,” Reichert said.

Tacoma City Councilman Mike Lonergan called the moment “bittersweet,” noting the young nation continues to face challenges to its very existence.

But on a lighter note, he remarked on the overnight improvement in the weather:

“My church attempted to put on a youth barbeque yesterday and I’m seriously questioning who has better connections.”
