"Our pets in Heaven"

Way back in '87 I wrote a poem to be included in a Children's book of poems.  Its on the subject of our pets being in Heaven.  I personally have no idea if pets go to Heaven.  I do know from personal experience that we can love pets as much as we love our own children.  And there has to be more to this connection than just the wonderful experience of pet ownership here on Earth.  I do tend to doubt that animals that live and die here on Earth continue to exist after their death.  But when we lose a pet and get a replacement, we continue to love the new pet just as much as the previous one.  So even though our actual pets may not live eternally, our love for them does.

I do believe there will be cats and dogs and every other animal in Heaven but misquitos (since they can't bite a glorified body!)  And just as we transfer our love from one pet to the next down here, I believe we will love the Heavenly animals just as much as the Earthly ones.  Its our love for our pets that goes to Heaven with us, and in this sense, our pets will be there in Heaven.

Here is the poem I wrote.............

A child asked a wise man,
She said, "I need to know,
How can I enjoy Heaven,
If my puppy's here below?"

The wise man scratched his beard,
And pondered on the thought,
And finally said, "My dear, dear child,
An answer I have not."

The child said, "But Sir!
My puppy has been good!
He's never chased a kitten,
And wouldn't if he could!"

"He sleeps with me at night,
And plays with me all day,
I hope that you can find out,
If he will have to stay."

The wise man softly smiled,
And wiped away her tears,
He sat her in his lap,
And tried to calm her fears.

He said, "As far as I can figure,
Our gracious God above,
Created little puppies,
for little girls to love.

And if your little dog,
Was such a friend to you,
Then when you get to Heaven,
I believe he'll be there too."
