In a Godly family, the father is the head of the household, and the children and wife under him. 
 
I believe if the father goes, the family goes, unless there are rebellious members, then things could be different.  I think the family is to act as a whole, and God counts them as one. 
 
When man and woman marry they become one, and the children come from that, and do not become their own person until they leave home, and are out from their parents authority.
