"The Ten Virgins"

Most of us agree that the 5 wise virgins are spirit filled Christians.  There is much discussion however, on who the 5 foolish virgins are. I have heard that they are Jews, or the unsaved or that they are Christians who are not living a spirit filled life.

Whenever the Bible speaks of virgins, It is usually speaking of God’s chosen.  But the word virgin has also been used to depict the world.

 Isaiah 47:  1Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon , sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

Jeremiah 46:   11Go up into Gilead , and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt : in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.

The lamp (light) is Jesus who is the light of the world.  It is also His Word.

Psalm 119:  105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Proverbs 6:  23For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

The oil is the Holy Spirit.

Song of Solomon 1:  3Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.

Psalm 23:   5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

1 John 2:  27But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

The ten virgins are the whole world that God loves.

John 3:   16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

All of the virgins have lamps (access to the Word.)  This is made apparent by the parable in Matthew 13:

18Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.

   19When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

   20But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

   21Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

   22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

   23But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Those who have oil in their vessels (the Holy Spirit in their hearts)  are the five wise virgins.  Those who do not have oil, are those who have heard the word, but have not accepted salvation.  They may call themselves Christians, but have not been willing to give up their own desires.

To the five wise virgins:

Revelation 3:  7And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

   8I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

   9Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

   10Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

   11Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

To the five foolish virgins:

Revelation 3:  14And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

   15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

   16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

   17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

   18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

   19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
