Gene Elizabeth Burkey; February 23, 1923 - October 6, 1999. She would have been here eighty-three years now, but she left seven years ago. She talked for years about the day her body would die. She called it her graduation day. Several years before that, she chose and purchased a new dress she wanted her body to be buried in. She called it her graduation dress.
 
Preceded in death by her oldest son, Joe Burkey. Yes, that is me. The death of my body in July of 1999 and my experience was comforting to her. Her body deteriorated gradually for a month, but she was confident and eager to go; no fear, just ready to see her Jesus. Praise God for her comfort both mentally and physically.
 
One of Jeff or Tim’s buddies tagged her with “Ma Burkey” and she was known that way by thousands of kids. She helped kids in Sonday school, Cub Scouts, and everything else on their way growing up. The yard never looked real good and the house wasn‘t immaculate, but she offered Sue, Tim, Jeff, me, and our friends a fine home, not just a house, open to everyone. She concentrated on people, not things.
 
It was common to hear, “MA BURKEY,” shouted out wherever she went, even inside stores. This was humorous in her latter years when children she had helped were in their thirties and forties, but still shouted “MA BURKEY” when they saw her. She had always welcomed kids she didn’t even know into her home.
 
Adults also loved Mom. She visited, took meals, counseled, and more and all quietly. I continually learned from other people about things she had done for them. Mom never preached to people, but she did talk about Jesus and The Bible if they wanted to. Mostly she showed Jesus to them by what she did.
