Dan. 9:25,26 says, "Know therefore and understand, that
from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem
(issued by Cyrus in 454 BC) unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven
weeks, and threescore and two weeks (483 yrs - 454BC + 1 [because there
was no zero yr] = 30 AD)
My history book says Cyrus issued this decree circa 538
BC, not 454 BC (which was the first decree issued by Artaxerxes--the second
and more famous one coming roughly 10 years later in 444 BC) Was
this an oversight, or is there another command issued by Cyrus that I'm
not aware of?
Here's an excellent article that analyzes the three commands
and provides ample evidence why the first command issued by Artaxerxes
to Ezra in 458 BC is the only logical choice of the three commands that
fulfills Daniel's prophecy, thus adding weight to Miriam Howards' impressive
series of essays, "Those Certain Years and Days of Daniel's People" in
which she postulates that 458 BC is the correct date.
