Same Sex Marriage Gains Support In N.Y. State

First published: Monday, May 1, 2006

ALBANY -- Support for same-sex marriage is gaining in New York, a little more than a month before the state's highest court will hear debate on the constitutionality of the current ban.
In the last week, 132 law professors -- including two former Court of Appeals judges -- 14 civil liberties groups and 200 religious organizations filed motions favoring making such relationships legal.

Others who filed motions of support include the NAACP Legal Defense Fund; National Organization for Women; Asian American Bar Association; American Psychological Association; and the American Psychiatric Association.

Religious groups who signed on include Episcopal, United Methodist, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ and Unitarian churches, and conservative and reform Jewish temples.
