Israel's population over 7 millionOn the eve of the 58th Independence Day, Israel's population has reached 7,026,000. This figure is 8.7 times larger than it was when the state was established. Israel had 806,000 citizens in 1948, and half of them still live here.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, 80 percent of Israelis - 5,639,000 - are Jewish and 20 percent - 1,387,000 - are Arab. Over the past year Israel's population grew by 118,000, pushing it past the 7-million mark. Most of the increase - 104,000 individuals - was from natural growth (births minus deaths).
Over the past year some 138,000 babies were born and 21,000 immigrants arrived. Over the past 58 years, a total of seven children were named Atzmaut (independence), mainly in the early 1950s.
