"Yellowstone questions"

Yesterday Yellowstone being on high alert was on the major national news tickers and today nothing.

Is it still an imminent threat but now just old news?

Is "high" the highest threat level that the USGS labels a volcano (so is Yellowstone at its maximum before possible eruption)?

What exactly is this high status gauged upon? Has there been new data that precipitated raising the alert status? Or, did the USGS just decide to finally alert the public (Yellowstone has been suspicious for a while).

I would have thought that this high alert would have sent many into panic mode, especially considering the Discovery movie that opened up many eyes to the fact that Yellowstone is not just a park with a few hot springs and geysers but a menancing supervolcano that could be caststrophic for the entire United States when she blows.

Seems basically like business as usual even the enormity and high potential of it blowing are beyond comprehension.

Maybe that's precisely why-people rather just not think about it because of the impact it would have.

IMHO, Yellowstone must be at a very dangerous level for the USGS to not only warn the public but also for them to allow the major news networks to sound the alert.

It truly is amazing that it is not all over the news- the death of the Pope was non-stop news coverage for days but a possible eruption of a supervolcano that could change the earth's climate and cause the demise of world's superpower is bascially ignored.

Again, IMHO, our government probably felt they had to at least put out a warning but probably will play it down to a very minimum because if they really emphasized the magnititude of and all the implications of an eruption, panic, chaos and anarchy would ensue. The mindset that "why panic the public and cause chaos" when they are not POSITIVE that it will happen so don't emphasize it.

Also, in reality, if this was being stressed, people would be evacuating from all the surrounding states and much of America would be stocking up on survival supplies and what would that do to our economy? Hey, its all about the economy anyway isn't it-

This is almost like your stereotypical supercatastrophic movie wherein the government suppresses information due to the above.

One more thing, right when the Discovery movie came out my husband kept saying that the release of the movie was a purposeful effort to educate the public about the danger of Yellowstone and and the effects and with the "walk to life" in the event of an eruption.

Any answers or thoughts would be appreciated-
