"to Tracy re May 15"

Shalom Tracy:

I can speak to May 15 being Shavuot, and this is Pentecost ONLY in the meaning of 50 days.  It is NOT counted as the church counts.

Goes like this.

Waaaay back in late winter, early spring (February 10 to March 11) was the lunar month of Adar.  Near the end of this lunar month of Adar, barley in Israel was "checked-out" for being abib, that means ready, having "starting" grain in it's hulls.  This was important because in the following month, on the first day of the week (Sunday) after Pesach, a wave offering of barley would be part of the First Fruit's ceremonies and there should BE SOMETHING in that hull!

Now the calculated Jewish calendar this year said an extra month, Adar II, would be needed to allow the barley to be ready for First Fruits.  Of course few of them seem to remember the purpose behind Adar II anymore, for them it is just a calculation now that keeps the lunar calendar in reasonable alignment with the solar calendar year.

A little rabbit trail here:  The Muslim calendar is also lunar BUT they certainly don't have First Fruits! so their "seasons" do not stay aligned with the true seasons.

But ... back to May 15!

For those who acknowledged ready barley was found in Adar, Pesach was celebrated March 25/26 not April 24/25.

Then the count to Shavuot began on the first day of the week following March 26, which this year was March 27! as Pesach was on Sabbath!  So counting 50 days from then brings one to May 14/15.

Shavuot in this counting is always "Saturday evening to Sunday evening".  And Saturday evening is always the end of Sabbath ... which begins on Friday evening.
