How to throw a baseball....If I use just my hand, it will go a few feet, in the general direction I'm facing....
If I add my wrist, it will go a bit farther, again, in the general direction I'm facing....
Adding the arm adds distance.....
Putting the shoulders and torso into the mixture adds more distance and some force.....
If I get up out of my chair, and put my legs into it, I can throw the ball a long distance, or a short distance with a lot of force.....
If I open my eyes, I can hit the target.
The legs are not designed to throw baseballs, yet they add distance and force to the throw when they add their strength. The eyes are not designed to throw a baseball, yet they add accuracy when they are used to focus on the target. Neither the legs nor the eyes can hold a baseball like the hands can, but we can throw the ball harder, farther, and more accurately when each part of the body takes its own unique function and adds its abilities to the effort of throwing the ball.
It's like that with a church. Yes, the various parts can do what they are designed to do on their own, but when all the parts work together, and when we add our own unique function to the effort of "throwing the ball," our distance (outreach) increases, we become more forceful (effective), and we have a much better chance to "hit the target." And while it may be true that our specific part of the body may not be designed to do what another part of the body is trying to do, that does not mean we cannot add our support, strength, encouragement, and abilities to what that other part of the body is trying to accomplish. And just like the parts of the body, we can take our abilities and talents, and become much more effective at whatever we are trying to accomplish as a body, even if we're not the part "holding the ball."
How can your "part of the body" help the other parts to do their job more effectively?
"Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these member do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others." Romans 12:4
"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ." 1Corinthians 12:12
